Landing and flying out of Atlanta covered most of the East coast, and around 20 states in the US in years gone by. Very much looking forward to the deep south, the furthest i have been was North Carolina, so this little trip will be new to me. Any advise welcome, this is the rough route i have come up with. 1400 miles

hired a Ford Mustang, no hotels or hostels booked, will see where we end up, needless to say my wife and my best mates wife are not best pleased at this lads road trip :D

Hmmm, not sure I'd have gone Mustang for that trip. There isn't any obvious convertible territory to make up for the fact it's a pretty unrefined cruiser on long trips. Best left for California methinks, you'd have been better off with a luxobarge.

i know, i can still change but a Mustang has always been my car since a kid, be nice to drive one, even if i do regret it :D

Isn't jack daniels distillery between nashville and Atlanta.

I would like to go there, but too far in land, we're doing east coast.

Have a child you can't afford, take fake plates, steal other peoples fuel and get away with it because your poor.

;)

You'll find it quite underwhelming if its been your dream to drive one. They are good fun in the right setting - cruising down the Pacific Coast Highway for example - but on a mostly freeway road trip it's just a cheap plastic unrefined car. I had one in California and it made the trip but for the East Coast this year I went Luxury Sedan instead and was very happy with it. Soaks up the miles better.

Why not do a 24 hour hire of a V8 Mustang (These are expensive so you wont want one for the whole trip) to get arguably more of the real Muscle car fix than you will with the V6 - and then do the rest of the trip in a nice big Sedan? :)

well this one is booked for 10 days at a sweet price of $275 :D with 40% discount, im currently driving a nissan primary at home so i kinda think it will do.

Wait.. have you paid in dollars for your hire car?

If you've booked it through a US site in dollars you'll probably find you are missing all the essential insurance you'll need - which you'll end up having to pay for at the counter and which will drastically increase the price of your rental - ie, by double.

ALWAYS book through a UK company - if you book with, say, Hertz on the UK site in Sterling you get all the insurance required and no excess included for no extra cost at a rate that even American citizens often cannot get on US car hire.

Make sure you double check this, its VERY important!

Bingo. Every time I rent a car over there I always get a spiel from the clerk about how awesome my deal is and a "how the heck did you get this?!" You simply cannot get a better deal by booking other than through a UK agent.

I spend a lot of time in New Orleans and SE Louisiana and Mississippi, so if you have any questions I'd be happy to answer. How long are you planning to spend in New Orleans? Mobile, AL is a bit of a nowhere. I wouldn't plan on spending a night there. There are plenty of places on the MS coast that will be a much better experience. They're little known Gulf Coast resorts but there's plenty of awesome beaches and casinos. I'd thoroughly recommend heading a bit further east to Pensacola, FL. We spend a couple of weekends each summer there and it's a great experience. Awesome weather, plenty of resort activites (water sports, drinking etc...) and friendly people too. Check it out.

Yea that looks to be missing all the insurance that matters.

Also with Hertz never use a cdp code to which you are not entitled as they can void it. Are you actually a 'Hertz retiree'?

You got me worried now, is this all the ones I need?

CDW, Theft protection, 3rd party liability, Suplamentry liability, UnInsured motorist protection

I would be amazed if you are not questioned at the desk using a code like that. You are quite obviously not a Hertz retiree and they will know this.

For a UK resident the cheapest and best way to rent with Hertz is using the uk site. It's a totally inclusive rate with everything you need.

I'd assume they could ask you to show proof of employment and void your booking if you can't.

fair do's i will have a look at the uk site as at the min they have 33% off anyway, so happy to pay extra to be safe.
