USA road trip coming up.. Ford Mustang hired, advise on route please

fair do's i will have a look at the uk site as at the min they have 33% off anyway, so happy to pay extra to be safe.

It's worth planning on paying the extra. If they don't say anything then great result! If they do though it would be nice to have planned for the difference because it could easily add up to a few hundred bucks.

I did a part of your route a couple of years ago - that part of Florida, as well as the drive up from New Orleans to Memphis. That area of Florida is very quiet, wooded and the exact opposite of the tourist side of Florida... meaning that it's really quite charming.

The drive up from New Orleans to Memphis is quite quiet if I recall, although we spent that entire stretch arguing with each other!

I'd actually recommend going slightly west from Memphis into Arkansas - beautiful state. went canoeing up the Buffalo river, had wild turkeys running along the banks with us, turtles swimming up to the canoe. Amazing experience.

Once in Memphis, Graceland is a massive tourist trap and ridiculously expensive. We headed to Sun Studios, and it's a great tour.

Enjoy :)

yeah stop D is in Arkansas, so hopefully be cool, im not looking for two much tourist stuff, i know graceland and will be, but hopefully a even mix.

Scuzi - well mate, you can see my planned route, any info or places to stop/stay/visit would be great. also any area's to avoid when you have two lads drinking and getting loud :D

Sorry to hijack thread, but half our trip is totally unplanned. Is there big chains of motels and any idea what sort of price? Or do they very massively.

Oh yeah, missed that! It really is quite a lovely part of the country. Yours is a route I think most people skip over when doing their US road trip, but I'd argue it's probably one of the most relaxing and charming.

I can only really speak for Louisiana but if you're in New Orleans, stay well away from anywhere that isn't touristey. Stick to the French Quarter, Garden District and certain parts of the Marigny. If you go outside of that you could easily stray into one of the many ghettos where you WILL get robbed and you probably will get shot. If I have to go into these areas I usually have one of these with me.

If you're only planning on spending a couple of nights there you won't need to stray out of the French Quarter. There's plenty of night life to keep you occupied. If you fancy something a bit more down to earth, walk up to Frenchmen Street where there are loads of Jazz clubs. It's a Boheminan kind of area but the music is very good and worth a look. You get some big jazz players showing up there.

I've always found Best Western to be the better quality for price. Get AAA, and you get 10%-15% off most of the hotels.

i have nothing booked, most places are upto a certain standard, and i would often try a few and haggle a little, i cant remember the prices as my last trip was 2008, but motels/hotels/hostels are all a lot cheaper than the UK.

Out of interest I just looked at the ghetto's on Google Maps. Sweet Jesus, they're like the end of the world. They look almost apocalyptic.

Yeah they're not much different now. Lot's of abandoned properties, the roads are all screwed up from the floods and you get a lot of people sitting on their porches waiting for naive white guys to wander in :D

i just amended my booking using the sale code 33% instead of the dodgy one, comes in @ £220 all in. happy to be safer.

Isn't jack daniels distillery between nashville and Atlanta.

I would like to go there, but too far in land, we're doing east coast.

Jack Daniels Distillary is in Lynchburg, about 1:30hrs north west of Chattanooga. The tour is fantastic and they take you round working parts of the distillary. Best of all it's Free. I would consider it a must on that route. We did a 3-4hr round trip for it and it was totally worth it!

According to Google it's 40mins from the I-24 which runs between nashville and Chatanooga.

Have you done Charleston or Savannah? They are both very nice places, you would have to head east a bit for that though. There is also the Smoky Mountains about 2 hrs from Atlanta / Chatanooga, but again it's east.

thanks mate, will have a look at that, only worry is i only have 10 days, day 1 landing in Atlanta and being a alt country music fan i want to be in Nashville for day 2 for my birthday :)

That is too far for 10 days, would would end up with no time to see anything. Everyone has different priorities for what is top of the visit lists. There is not really much in Atlanta tourist wise it's very modern (Because we burnt it to the ground) Coca Cola World is worth a visit, quite expensive but the museum part is good, all the guides say if you are going to visit a city in Georgia make it Savannah.

I would say that for a deep south experience Charleston and Savannah are fantastic vists though. They are both incredibly scenic, with good food and the Southern Drawl. I am sure the french quarter in New Orleans is a similar experience though. I had always wanted to goto to New Orleans, but after the trip last year there is less draw for me now.

If you are going Atlanta to Nashville direct, I would get an early start, Chatanooga is worth a stop if you have the time but I don't think you will. Jack Daniels is about a 1hr detour and the tour isn't massivly long, you are so close to it you really should go, It is fantastic. The scenery between Chatanooga and Lynchburg is really nice as well, some really quirky towns. Makes it a 5-6hr drive total, so it's easily doable with Jack Daniels as a halfway break and you can get lunch in Lynchburg. http://www.bbqcaboose.com

*Another edit, you gain 1hr crossing to Central time just North of Chattangooga which is a bonus.

Are you allowed to carry a gun? I assume you're not an American citizen (yet)?

Nope. I can't get a concealed carry permit unless I'm a citizen. I can carry a gun if I'm at the range or out hunting or something like that though. It's not my gun ;)

Which reminds me, if you haven't already done it, stop at a shooting range somewhere and rent out a few guns. It's awesome fun!

I like the Buick LaCrosse. Would probably have one of them if I doing this.

Super lush!

It's really not - if you like the LaCrosse I suggest you go and drive a Vauxhall Insignia in this country as they're basically the same car aside from some small interior differences.

Figured it wouldn't be yours :D.

If you happened find a gun on your person (fancy that ;) ) in a time of need, what would happen if you used it in a justified manner since you're not legally allowed one?
