Right, it's that time of year again; my birthday and time to treat myself!

I want to replace my current 5770 for something a bit more gutsy to go alongside my athlon quad and 4gb ram.

I am looking at either the gtx560 or 6870. What I want to know is which one is better, which one for overclocking and will one be better along side my athlon quad.

Please help!

Looking to buy next month!

Thanks

Sitting here on a £120 XFX 6870 which I bought in mid July last year.

Overclocked from 900/1050 to 1000/1200 on stock cooling, and never peaks over 66c with 50% fan speed.

Definately the bargain of the century tbh. I also got a free copy of Shogun 2! (This wasn't from OCUK) :P

The funny thing is 7 months later it has actually increased in value to around £130-140 :S

Ah, ok, sorry about that :o Forgot there was a non Ti version.

It's ok dude. So the 6870 is my best bet then? I am picking up a new monitor this year too as my current LG 19" Widescreen is on it's way out. So looking to game at 1920*1080. Will the 6870 be enough for games like Batman, NFS and BF3 including MW3

What resolution do you game at?

What's your budget?

What make and model is your PSU?

These basic questions need to be asked before anything else. It's no good suggesting a GTX 580 to somebody who's only got 150 quid to spend, a 250 watt PSU and is running a 19" CRT!

IMO I'd sort out the rest of your system before spending a wad of cash on a new video card. Your PSU and CPU would be where I'd start as the 5770 shouldn't be struggling too much at 1440x900.

+1

Maybe also wait for the mid rang AMD cards to come out

I had a 6870 on the athlon x4 640. I now have on an i5.

It ran everything. Only problem was my x4 was at over 90% on BF3. I have gained FPS by a switch. It's an expensive one though.

I run games on high and medium settings on 1080 and have to say i think the 6870 is a good card for the money. Just wish I had more VRAM for BF3.

6850 or better
460/560 or better
should let you play any game at a screen resolution of 1440x900. At 1080p you will be able to play everything again with some compromises (no AA etc).

BF3 at Ultra, 1920x1080 with no AA yields an average of around 45-50fps on my rig. Thats with a big OC. It can drop to as low as 30fps in really heavy 64 player action.

It's much better on High settings as you can add 2xAA. In all honesty if you want to play BF3 full whack you need a 2gb 6970/6950 as a minimum IMO...

batman is heavily biased to nvidia IIRC

I don't want to play BF3 on ultra settings or anything like that. I want it mainly to run the games I have smoother. My card isn't struggling that much at the moment. It's mainly for games like Batman where everything is on medium and I want to go up to high, I don't really give a rats ass about AA!

My Athlon is a good CPU and I cannot afford much atm. The GPU is where I think I need it atm, either that or a Phenom X6 1100T and overclock the nuts off it!

Hmmm I suppose. Only thing is, I have a wedding to save up for, a honey moon to save up for and moving house during the summer so funds are slightly low atm!

What will benefit me more??

Keep the 5770 and get an X6 to boost my performance and maybe gain some frames.

Or

Keep my overclocked Athlon Quad and get a better GPU to boost my frames?

Save your cash for now and get a complete overhaul once you have the money? Like you said, you aren't struggling that much.

What games you want to benefit from the purchase?
