I know its a silly question but i just want to know how long the i5 will be strong for as i am looking to upgrade soon. I am only asking because the Ivy bridge will be here in a few months and will that take over from the SB like FX is taking over AM3 phenoms?

Just look at the 775, it has been around since 2004, hopefully the 775 will be pensioned off, & the 1155 will take it's place.
If the 1155 remain as popular as the 775, no reason why it shouldn't still be around in five years or more time.

I upgraded to a 2500k over xmas and I usually keep my CPU's about two years. But i'm sure it'll still be a good CPU in 2 years time. Just that there will probably be something worth upgrading to by then.

got a 2600k before xmas, still on a stock cooler at 3.5ghz so will have to ramp it up a bit before considering going for ivy

To be fair I believe the 2500K will be like the trusty old Q6600 and be kncking about in 4 or 5 years with some people and still performing finely.

Might still be around but I bet it won't be able to play much, if rumors are true all the new consoles are being shown this year and definitely released by next..and with that comes the true mass next gen push, thats providing pc even sees any of the games ported over

Until Xbox 720 is released.

Remember PC gaming is just console porting these days. Spending anything more than £350~ on a rig is just laughable for PC gaming :P

....I roughly calculated the cost of your system and unless you got the whole thing off ebay the parts are more than £350

You're on a PC forum and you say that?! I'll give you a 5 second head start, a lot of PC games might be ports but 90% of them play better on a PC anyway. BF3 is so laggy on the PS3 compare to the PC version.

Should I mention console reliabilty vs PC?

This is the kind of attitude that makes me cringe being a PC enthusiast. Do what you like, let others do what they like; no need to get into pointless arguments.

Thanks for the replies people, I know the Q6600 is still used today and i never had any doubts about SB chip but i just wanted to make sure.
