Spec me a ... Holiday???

So I posted this in GD when I meant to post in here:

Yes another "spec me" thread I know, but was hoping I could feed off the motoring minds of OcUK to help me decide on my summer holiday.

I have pondered many destinations (New York, Niagara Falls and countless European destinations), but I think I have decided to stay in the UK, and have a driving holiday instead.

The plan is to pick a hotel/log cabin as the central base for our holiday, and have nearby attractions just a short drive away for each day of our holiday. So far the best location I can think of is the lakes (epic roads, epic scenery and peaceful area). I have done the lakes before but must admit I did not take full advantage of it, so am more than willing to have another pop.

Any other ideas for destination?

Many thanks

Yorkshire Dales? Similarly beautiful scenery to Lakes or Wales, I used to have to drive from Nottingham to Barrow-in-Furness relatively regularly and if the M6 was jammed up I'd use the "scenic route". Stunning scenery and some tasty roads too.

Mid-wales probably has more roads to find and criss-cross the region in but, as recommeded by Vespasian777, the West Coast of Scotland is stunning. Steve Carter has some great pictures.

Mid Wales? Plenty of great roads in any direction then. Fantastic scenery too.

Wales may be a bit far of a trek. Ideally trying to keep costs down to a minimum, I live near Newcastle, so the lakes and Yorkshire dales are ideal for me. So looking for a location within that area.

West of Scotland is a must in my bucket list, and may consider this too, depending on how much it will all add up to.

Thanks for all the replies

Have also been to the dales too (happily go again), last time we stayed in Garforth just outside Leeds (had an offer through hotel) and drove to Ingleton Waterfall's for the day out.

Possibly one of the best weekend breaks I have had. Gives you an idea of the sort of thing I am into, and the drive from Garforth to Ingleton was again one of the best drives I have ever been on!

I'd say north to mid wales purely for the best roads (bar scotland so im told) I've been to the lakes quite a few times and although the roads are good up there in my humble opinion they're not a patch on the north wales roads.

I am a bit biased as i do live there though!

Me and my partner have also chosen the Lake District instead of going abroad this year.

We hired a cabin lodge at White Cross Bay for a week and just used that as our base to explore the region, it was a fanastic break away.

We didn't have enough time to see everything we wanted to last time, so we have decided to go back this year.

Last year we also stayed at a holiday park on the North West Coast called Ocean Edge Leisure Park, which was booked through the same website: www.slholidays.co.uk

The park is in a good holiday location for sightseeing the North West of England!

Head north of the border & keep going.

Some superb routes up in Scotland, not to mention scenery.

If I was to have a road trip UK based holiday (I'd rather pull my own teeth out given my job!) I'd go to Scotland without a doubt.

I just found a map of a route I drove in Scotland a good few years in my Scooby:

Did all that in a day - corking roads :D  I remember filling up with SUL everytime we found a garage with some, blew half a tank in something like 50 miles at one point.

I really want to go to Scotland sometime; it's pretty sad that I've been around Europe several times but never driven to one of the best bits of my own small country :(
