Kicking off the CES show that starts today, Huawei (pronounced Waway, I learnt :p) announced the slimmest phone about at 6.68mm, the Ascend P1 S:

The specs look very interesting too:

4.3-inch Super AMOLED qHD (960 540)
GPU is an SGX 540 GPU
1.5 GHz dual-core processor (TI OMAP 4460)
Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich)
8MP rear camera with 1080p recording
1.3MP front-facing camera with 720p recording
Bluetooth 3.0
1GB RAM
4GB ROM
Quadband (GSM/GPRS/EDGE)
Pentaband (UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA)

You can bet that the pricing is going to be very competitive also. It's been known for a while that Huawei had something cooking for Android but this new phone looks pretty amazing. I imagine we'll get details on the camera itself and other stuff like what storage options are included and battery size (the important bit).

Also, from the photo it looks like they're keeping the native Android launcher. A good move. Be interested in seeing if they've tweaked anything else.

Looking forward to CES announcements this year

Edit:
Yes it looks very much like a....Nokia 3310 :p

I always though it was "Who-are-we", which I though was a pretty bad name for a company :p

The Acer tablet looks pretty awesome as a media device though with that resolution.

I wouldn't be surprised if they're the new HTC of 2012, back when they were relatively unknown in the consumer world.

Coming out with phones like the P1 seems to be the right move, just depends on price :p

If it is indeed as cheap as expected then I can see this phone and others like it being bundled free on affordable contracts instead of having to pay a handset fee up front for the pleasure.

At least though it will force competition toward HTC/Samsung etc to lower their prices....maybe.

The Transformer now has some direct competition, hehe:

Lenovo's IdeaTab S2

This wouldn't be the first time for Lenovo to release a tablet-plus-keyboard combo, though the illusive IdeaPad U1 Hybrid was merely adding Windows to the updated LePad via the keyboard dock. That said, Lenovo's freshly-announced IdeaTab S2 10" is a full package dedicated to Android 4.0, and it sports a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon 8x60A or 8960. Compared to the ASUS Transformer Prime and Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, this 10-inch IdeaTab comes close to or even beats them with a 0.34-inch (8.69mm) thickness and a 1.27-pound (580 grams) weight -- certainly much better than its Chinese counterpart, the LePad S2010. Other features include a 1,280 x 800 LED-backlit IPS display, 3G with call support, 1GB LPDDR2 RAM, SSD of up to 64GB, HDMI Micro connection and front (1.3MP) and rear (5MP with autofocus) cameras. As for battery life, the tablet alone can keep cranking for up to 9 hours, and sliding it into the keyboard dock gets you an additional 9 hours plus two USB 2.0 ports, a multitouch trackpad and an SDHC card reader. No word on availability or pricing yet, so we'll keep poking Lenovo until we hear something.

That looks like it's going to cost a bit more than a Transformer! I checked one out recently and was impressed by the build quality and dimensions. Shame I have no real usable need for a lapbook any more though!

I'm personally hoping that the release of the Galaxy Note has created an interest in at least a couple more Tablet/Phone hybrids. But battery life needs to be improved!

tabook...:D

That Huawei phone looks a lot like the Galaxy S II from the back...

The top bezel looks a bit too big as well. I fear at 6.6mm thick, it's going to have a small battery also.

In before SGS3 tease, Samsung galaxy ace2, HTC "looks like a desire" 3, ZTE Midrange re-brander (sporting a 1gig finally) and Acers odd handset range (I jest).

The Huawei is likely to be mid-high fodder because of the onboard memory (you'd be surprised how much this is important to buyers at the moment) and lack of stand-out brand, likely free on £25+ at a guess, it's time they broadened out to be honest, they make some excellent kit in telecoms and their HSPA gear is seriously good. I hope it's a sorta sleeper release, I always prefer cheaper gear ;) Might be a good rebrand if they go network OEM with it, a sort of mid-high SF maybe? I can hope.

That tablet resolution though, impressive. Guess we can see where the ipad3 is going :)

Yeah their telecoms expertise will certainly be useful in phones like this, at least I hope so.

With people complaining about data speed issues and reception and battery drain, I'm hoping to see some positive reviews on Huawei's technologies.

SGS3 though is what I'm really looking forward to seeing.

I imagine a tease at the very least hopefully, the time is looming very close and if Sammy want to make an impact and get people talking especially after such a successful GS2 release then I'd hope so!

One eye will be on Sony's flagship but I hope the rumours aren't true (no SD, Android 2.37). The other on the GS3 - here is hoping!

Are we definitely going to see it?
Honestly I doubt it, Samsung have in the past announced early Feb for the past 2 handsets. But I can hope.

Incase you're listening Samsung, I settle for no less than: 1.5+ dual core, 720p non-pentile, SAMOLED screen, battery the size of the sun, 1.5gig of ram and 16/32gig onboard. And bring back the wolfson sound chip.

That isn't a big enough upgrade for Samsung, it will have a fancy new screen, 2GB RAM, obnoxiously large camera sensor and quad-core no doubt.

Battery on the Huawei device is reported to be 1670 mAh according to Anandtech. There is a slightly thicker model which sports a 1800 mAh.

Yeah the current lineup of 2012 phones all seem to fare close as far as numbers are concerned. What made the GS2 so appealing was that its spec was beyond anything else at the time.

GS3 needs to be the same this year!

Edit*
Yeah there is a P1 (non S) model for LTE markets, that will have a bigger battery in the same was the GS2 had a bigger battery in the States as well.
