Antec H2O 920 vs Corsair Hydro H80

haha, they're good for simplicity but the DH14 is pretty beast and will be a lot quieter than the stock fans on both the Antec and Corsair lclcs.

Hmmm there seems to be a lot of advocates for air cooling yet when I see great temps of 21c being posted they aren't from air coolers but liquid coolers.

Self enclosed ones?

BTW, my iPhone is awesome, whenever I say self enclosed it corrects to awful enclosed lol!!

Don't get me wrong, the self enclosed coolers are decent, but price per performance per silence is terrible compared to proper liquid or the best airs.

That's probably because they compare their results to stock air cooling. Also idle temperatures aren't the best thing to go by.

If you can fit it in your case skip the H80 and get the H100

on Intel Burn Test Maximum I got 56c on Maximum burn, idle temps of 21c

I don't think my i5 2500k has been under 4.6GHz since day 1 lol....oh apart from when it idles at 1.6GHz...which is probably most of the time :o

Won't 4.6Ghz be a massive stress on your CPU, as it's closer to the magic 5Ghz?

I dont do anything that massively CPU intensive so it's purely for bragging rights or benchmarking that I would whack it above 4Ghz

Any suggestions on what fans to swap out for on the H100?

if you want quiet, the stock fans are ear bleeders after a while as the pitch they operate at appears to be the pitch best suited for aural torture

I have the H50 and people who say these self enclosed H20 solutions are crap are right. Hindsight tells me now I should have forked out for a decent 240mm rad, pump, res and kit rather than going for the simplicity of the one piece unit.

The only thing thee units really offer is ease of use. Despite what people might say they are relatively easy to install, just make sure you watch the corsair video first as following the OTB instructions is about as helpful as getting driving lessons from stevie wonder

I like you very much :p

It took me a few weeks to come to erms with the fact I made a bad call :( so now based on my experience I want peopel to not be fooled into thinking these simple units are every bit as good as custom loops.

Most of the time when people switch from Air to corsair/antec liquid units they rave about how much idle / load temps drop, the usual suspect here is that the airflow in their case to begin with was likely not optimised for an air cooler. So hot air pockets were likely building up or there was turbulence casuse by poor fan orientations / positioning.

A good example was one of my friedns who went from a megahelms to a h50 and said he saw 10°C drops in idle and load temps. I looked in his case and it was self explanatory, the rear fan was orientated to draw air in, the front fan was draing air in, the bottom fan was drawing air in and there was only 1 x 120mm in the roof (he has a 690II like me). The turbulence was mental and the temp differential in the case was insance around the gfx card and the cpu cooler fans

So you are not really comapring apples with apples. For the price of a H100 i'd say either 1. Save your cash and get a decent air cooler and set up your airflows right or 2. Slap anohter 80 - 100 down and get a decent 240 loop with a decent nikel block
