Is it me or is anyo9ne else not that excited about the 7900 release

They are over priced for what they are when you consider I could have bought 2 6950s (and unlocked them) for £400 just over a year ago, which would have offered superior performance (single gpu, micro stutter and xfire profile debates aside :p).

Newegg also have none in stock, it's easy to be the cheapest when you've got nothing to ship

Newegg had them in stock and sold out since they stuck to offical pricing.

You do realise how big Newegg is,right?? They are one of the biggest computer parts retailers in the US with an annual turnover of $2.5 billion.

BTW,why are you making excuses for UK retailers?? Many had cards at around £420 and now have magically bumped up prices to around £450 to £460.

In most games seeing a 30-40% fps boost? where are these figures?

From looking at a lot of the reviews at low resolutions (below 1980 by 1080 or 1980 by 1200 which seems about standard nowadays) the 580 and 7970 trade places constantly.

Looking at higher resolutions the 7970 stays at around 10-20% better in most case's i have not yet seen a 30 % rise over the gtx 580 in any review never mind a 40% rise...

30-40% is pushing it a bit but it could be more representative if you take into account overclocking.

Hardwarecanucks have a good summary:

http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/foru...s/49646-amd-radeon-hd-7970-3gb-review-25.html

25% seems to be the average boost with the biggest boost (30%) coming at 2560x1600 no AA.

TBH though given the new architecture and potential for overclocking there could be a lot performance to be "unlocked".

I think until games are actually needing this level of performance it seems rather pointless spending so much for just a slight increase in fps. When the majority of games need this kind of card then it will be worth an upgrade, until then the current gen will see the majority of people through until the back end of 2013 at the earliest.

Erm try running Eyefinity like resolutions or even 2560x1600 with AA and you will soon see that do need all the GPU grunt you can lay your hands on if you want to keep the framerates up and consistant.

For 1080p alone they are completely wasted (unless you want 3D).

I'll be excited in a month or two when prices start to fall, as is always the case.

If the tables were turned, I bet a fair few people on this forum wouldn't be moaning about prices as much as they are. For some reason people just expect AMD to be cheaper, when they clearly have no reason to. If anything, you should be blaming nvidia for this situation.

Overclock the 590 pulls away.

Not about people can't afford one most are not daft enough to pay them prices.

^ agreed

I may have the spending capability to get a new system every 6 months with the latest/greatest hardware, but i'm not about to throw best part of £1000 on a 7970 crossfire setup when the 6990 is still a beast.

That is what I mean, the point of these cards is the people that they are targetted for, i.e. the minority. Not many people play at anything other than 1080p so those lucky enough with the cash to have an eyefinity set up would in most cases have the money to buy a 7970 and even CF if necessary.

Current games for the majority of set ups will not need this extra power and probably won't for a good 18 months - 2 years minimum, basically not until the next gen of consoles take off.

What about if you want to play BF3/Crysis2 with hi res pack/dx11 on ultra settings at 1080p at a decent framerate????

I have 2 6970's CF and AMD have been pumping out VERY poor drivers i mean skyrim is still not fixed for CF... I will wait out for Keplar and see what happens i want jump to the green team for driver stability... whats the point in having all this power when drivers fall flat...

It's not fixed for SLI either, it's due to a problem with the engine. Apparently it's been an issue since Fallout 3.

Considering the prices of monitors, Eyefinity isn't exactly that expensive anymore. My setup consisting of 3 LG IPS231P's cost a little over £430.

I was specifically replying to this part of your post:

I was merely pointing out that even current games can require the level of performance offered by these cards. It all comes down to how much performance you need and if you are willing to pay for it or sacrifice something else to get it (ie turning down settings).

I agree with you at 1080p though. A overclocked HD6970/GTX570 or even a overclocked GTX560TI is often enough for the majority of people.

I associated AMD as a cheaper budget, Vaule for money brand, The prices are all wrong but it's the retailers causing the problems AMD want them for sale at £380 to £400, Not almost £500, I'm waiting for nvidia, Because i have a feeling they will be a lot quicker.

People forgetting we are in a recession, £500 for a videocard Crazy.

Are there any current games that need a 30% increase over a GTX 580 at present?

But i guess being an enthusiast i get why people are buying them :)

I hate to think what Kepler will cost.
