Happy New Year Rugby League fans and welcome aboard the new Rugby League thread for the coming year and season. Last year was a great season of rugby league culminating in a fantastic Grand Final. Lets hope this year will be even better.

Post the following:

1. Your team.
2. Your expecatations this season.
3. Your most anticipated new signings.
4. Who will win the league leaders shield?
5. Who will be the dark horses of the competition?
6. Any updates from your club, new ground etc?
7. Final league position of your club?

As usual I have compiled the following list of rugby league supporters on this forum and who they support for the first post, so feel free to speak up if there is anything wrong.

My answers:

1. Hull Kingston Rovers

2. I expect improvement from Rovers, as always. But this year I am hoping for us to start being competitive for 5th-6th place and in doing so this means taking it out of the hands of the likes of Catalan and Huddersfield. We have signed quite well this year, but there has been a big clear out too which means it will take some time for the team to gel and so realistically anything above 7th will be a bonus this year. Top 4 is a very hard thing to get right, we got it in 2009 but that was a blip year for many teams and it won't be so easy again.

Additionally, I no longer want us to get our arses handed to us so easily against the bigger teams. Many times last season we would concede early and then go on to have 40-50 points put on us. I don't mind us losing again to the likes of Saints or Wigan, but if we can decrease the margin of loss from the past few years then that will be very pleasing.

3. Shannon McDonnell coming in from the Knights at full back is an exciting prospect, he's fast and very attack minded which will hopefully bring something more to our game than Shaun Briscoe, no disrespect to Shaun, he did a fantastic job for us. My only slight doubt is defensively but I think we will cope better this season than last. Con Mika (Clint Newton replacement) signed by our new coach Craig Sandercock seems an exciting prospect, as does the signing of Mickey Paea who will probably add a bit of that nasty agression and power that we may have lacked in the forwards over recent years.

4. Wire - although they have lost a couple of folks like Matt King, they will be there or thereabouts but I am expecting another big year from the Wire.

5. Rovers! I think many bookies have already completely written us off for next season and have us placed at 9th, so I think if you are they kind of person who likes a bet, maybe the odds for Rovers are actually quite good.

6. The new stand has now got the go-ahead and the golf stand will be moved to the south shortly so that is extremely pleasing news.

7. Head says 7th, heart wants 5th.

Pre season games got underway for Rovers today with a defeat to Featherstone 20-12. The was side comprised mostly of the youngsters but they put up a great fight against the Championship winners today. I fully expect a few of the youngsters to pop up during the season with senior team appearances, Chris Heil, Jordan Cox and James Green being the most likely contenders.

Wigan next at home (couldn't have chosen a tougher pre-season game!), then FC then we are onto the first game of the season at Headingley so doubt we will get absolutely soaked in rain, I always do when we go there.

Exciting times ahead. :)

1. Your team.
Widnes Vikings

2. Your expectations this season.
Finishing in the top 10 would be nice for the first season. Pre-season friendlies have shown the team really needs to get used to each other but I have hope!

3. Your most anticipated new signings.
Err, the whole team is pretty much new so...

4. Who will win the league leaders shield?
Wigan would be nice. Anyone but Wire or Saints!

5. Who will be the dark horses of the competition?
Widnes, obviously ;)

6. Any updates from your club, new ground etc?
I can confirm our ground was built by competent builders and not gypses so it's still standing after the slight breeze we had last week. The "i-Pitch" as they're calling it will be finished on the 14th so it'll be interesting to see how the players find it.

7. Final league position of your club?
9th

3. Your most anticipated new signings.

Give Shaun Briscoe a cheer for us lot won't you? Rovers legend really, and he was one of our best players in the 2009 sort of era when he was Englands number one until a certain Mr Tomkins came about.

Legendary player, legendary nose.

I'm sure you guys will give him more than enough of a cheer when we play away against you guys :p

We gave Myler an appropriate cheer at the Boxing day friendly against Wire and he ended up with a dislocated elbow... oops! (We didn't want that to happen, was just banter!)

Yay a new RL Thread!! Woop Woop!

1. Warrington Wolves
2. Top 4
3. Ratchford, Hill, Waterhouse
4. Don't care about this anymore. Grand Final or nothing!
5. Catalan
6. Two new corners (one seating one standing) and the away end roof fell down a bit :D
7. Top 4

Only top 4??!?!?! I would have expected you to say top 2 finish.

Forgot to mention in opening post, what do you all think of the rule changes this year?

Personally, I don't understand the "kick conversion from hands" rule, surely it is easier if the ball is on the tee?

The cornerflag rule I like, so if you ground the ball for a try and also hit the corner flag, then it doesn't mean you are in touch. Good change.

But the one that gets on my goat is the leniency on holding down if the tackling player doesn't "hear" the call for the tackle being complete. Not sure on that one at all, surely this is just slowing down the game.

1) Leeds Rhinos

2) Last season was very special, after a poor start I don't think many expected Leeds to lift the end of season trophy. I would expect to see an extra effort made in lifting the Challenge cup and the season depends on how good the youngsters who broke into the team progress this season.

3) No new exciting prospects coming in, so far I believe it is just two signings Darrell Griffin from Huddersfield and Richard Moore from Crusaders, both props. Again it will be about the players we keep and who sign new contracts and the youth coming through over who we will bring in.

4) Warrington

5) I don't think there are any, I think it will be a close fought battle between last seasons top 5.

6) None that I am aware of, three academy players have been promoted.

7) Second I honestly believe the young talent will shine through this year.

Richard Moore is quite a hard running prop, not a bad acquisition from what I remember of him last season.

I'm definately looking forwards to Rovers first game, which is at Headingley, going to be a hard game and will set down an interesting marker for the rest of the season, win or lose. I'll bring my waterproofs though!

I personally don't think we will improve on the league performance. Position at the end of the season no longer matters, its winning the Grand Final that counts!

Are they removing the posts in the stands? Can imagine they'll block the view otherwise.

They are removing them thank gawd! I was sat near them for the Boxing day friendly and mentioned it at the time. The posts go down into the ground infront of seats!! So if they keep them in someone is sat straddling the post!

Would make for an hilarious picture.

Surely they must have adapted the roof a bit then? There won't be any support pitch-side on any corner. Unless it was designed with that possibility in mind...

There's 2 minutes left on the clock, you've just scored under the posts and the conversion will put you one point behind, do you

a: Put ball on tee and kick the conversion taking up valuable time

or

b: Drop goal conversion, get back in your own half quick and then return the kick off down field for a DG/Penalty/try

1. Your team - Warrington Wolves
2. Your expecatations this season - top 3
3. Your most anticipated new signings - Waterhouse
4. Who will win the league leaders shield - Wigan
5. Who will be the dark horses of the competition - Widnes, i dont expect them to be whipping boys!
6. Any updates from your club, new ground etc - As mentioned above, stadium upgrades and also our Chairman was awarded a CBE in the New Year honours list!
7. Final league position of your club -2nd, but with a Grand Final appearance.

Ah yeah I never thought of it that way before. Seems fair then, but imo they should change the rule to stop the clock as soon as the try is awarded. That way we avoid all that messing about, time wasting, whatever you want to call it when somebody is taking a kick. That would be a more appropriate rule change in my opinion.

I think they only get 1 minute anyway and then the clock is stopped, which is why you usually see Ganson blowing his whistle and waving his arm over his head when the kick is about to be taken (well, he usually only blows his whistle when its not one of his favourite teams to put the kicker off a second before he kicks the ball........)
