I am currently running an E5700 oc to 3.6 GHz and it runs games like mw3 and bf 3 with no problems but I know I will need to upgrade soon and dont have a lot of spare money atm so looking for a cpu (LGA 775) that will last me a while longer? dont want to spend over £120 any ideas ?

At the top end of your budget you could probably get a Q9550 from the Bay of E but you could save a few quid and get a Q6600 for £75 or so.

I think it would be a bit pointless goin for the Q6600 as its really not much better than what I have, Will probably save a bit more and go for the Q9550 :) you know what it will oc to ?

When you say running bf3 with no problems I take it you mean fully maxed out at ultra with maxed AA at 60fps?

That is running bf3 no problems :)

aye mate at times it jumps for a few seconds but usualy just at start :\ mw3 maxed out tho and never had any jumps or gitters :) can tell bf3 is pushing the system to the limit tho, thats one reason i want to upgrade (i) thanks nightglow but the situation im in just now i will need to save for a long time to get new mobo and i5 as im getting married and need to save for wedding:D

Seems a bit of a waste not overclocking it as they overclocked so easily. Mine has been running at 3.8 since the day i got it. Perfect :D

iv not been able to overclock much due to a useless board and ram tbh, im running a foxconn ela and bog standard 800mhz memory, had it to 3.2 fine, anywhere beyond and its unstable

It seems a bit of a waste to spend money on a 775 CPU now. Especially if you aren't getting any performance problems yet. Save your money so that when you really need to upgrade you can move to an 1155 platform and get a big step up in performance.

TBH a Q9xxx series CPU will not be cost effective as you are looking around £100+ for a Q9450/9550.

If you are prepared to hunt for bargains you should be able to pickup an i5 CPU for around £75. I managed to grab a generation 2 i5-2300 for £80odd from the OCUK clearance section. Regularly see i5-750's for sale in the members market along with socket 1156 boards.

For a quick cheap upgrade look at an E8xxx CPU, the E8400 and E8500 are both good CPU's and the extra cache will make a bit of difference to your current rig. Should be able to get 4Ghz on those CPUs too. I had an E8400 at 3.9Ghz before upgrading to the i5-2300 and for day to day use I don't notice the difference.

1. E8400/8500 - approximately £40-50
2. Q9550 - approximately £100-£150
3. i5-750 and 1156 M/B - approximately £100-150 + RAM (£30?)

stick with what ever you have save money for ivy bridge ? as old parts as 775 cpu and ddr2 memory becoming more expensive then newer hardware .

A few weeks ago I was in a similar Situation.. However, there could be a light at the end of the tunnel if you 'Shop Smart'

If you only wanna spend £120 then if you stretch maybe another £20 you Can get a fairly Decent 1155 Gen3 Board!!!! and 2.7Ghz Pentium G630 (dual core) and some decent DDR3 Ram.!! By no means nothing in comparison to the likes of i5.. but.. you're steady for another couple of years.. Just check out this post of mine here... and you'll See just what I mean..

MY BUDGET UPGRADE

If you're unsure I can show you my Windows Experience Index results to show you the jump in performance i recieved..!! :D
