Samsung buzzing and retailer woes

Right,

So I recently bought a Samsung 59D6900 Plasma 3D Tv from a known retailer. It was working perfectly until last week when I turned it and it started doing the much feared buzzing sound*. Having read about this online I thought I was a lucky buyer as my TV didn't have it in the beginning.

So I call the retailer, talk to their tech support who try to convince me that that's how the TV sounds and that it's normal. I *maybe* would have swallowed that if it made the noise from the beginning and I hadn't read about the issue online. So, the tech guy says that for them it's normal and if I don't like it I should contact samsung directly since, unless Samsung authorises the replacement they won't do it themselves.

So I contact samsung, go over some diagnostics and the Sammy tech guy says that the TV is faulty and authorises a replacement. I contact the retailer who passes me on to their senior tech guy who tries to tell me that 3m is too close for this TV and that I should be sitting more than 5m away and then the sound would be no problem (!!!). I cut him short of his BS and tell him that Sammy has authorised the replacement and that's that - send me a new one. Oh no he says, you have to bring it instore (I bought it over the phone) and get the replacement. I explain to him that I cannot alone bring a 59'' TV to a store without a car but he is having none of it. So I contact back samsung who authorise a free collection/delivery as well!!

Back to the retailer, who says that that's fine, now Samsung needs to call them and give them the authorisation codes (wouldn't accept them from me) to proceed. I call samsung who tells me that, no, it's the retailer who contacts them, not the other way around. So I'm in the middle pulling my hair out. Back to the retailer and finally come across a good tech chap who offers to give a call to Sammy, he sorts it out and tells me to call their head office customer service to arrange the date for delivery/pick-up.

So I call the head office, who tells me that no, they have to send an engineer to confirm the fault, otherwise they won't do the replacement. In vain I try to explain to her that sammy has authorised everything etc. After a lot of back and forth she accepts it and gives me a date.

The date comes, they bring the new TV and take away the old one. I plug in the new TV and...the buzzing is even louder with this one..I cannot describe how I felt having gone through all this malarkey (more than 4 hours of phone calls).

I call the retailer who point blank refuses any replacement as 'it's the TVs normal sound' and offers me an exchange with an LED/LCD if I want, but no more Samsung plasma's. Given that at the price point that model is I can't get any other plasma of that size I have no real option but to keep this one (LCD/LED won't do it for me). My only alternative is to contact Samsung and see if they can do something about it, but I've kind of given up on hoping.

Gutted..

I've noticed that if you tilt the TV a upwards slightly the noise is less. Also if you put something on the top of it (behind the bezel so it doesn't show) it muffles the buzzing as well. I just need to find some material to cover it to allow it to breathe as well if Samsung won't come forward with a solution.

Oh, and yes I know 'first world problems'. It just sucks to go through all this and still get no solution.

* For those not familiar with this issue, a lot of Samsung plasma's are making a loud buzzing noise, that is much louder than any normal TV operation noise and you can hear it more than 3m away and over the sound of tv programmes.

Been there, done that, got the t-shirt. Plasma tv's buzz, lcd's have banding and spotlighting. It's all because it's made with cheap parts to maximise profits.

EVERY replacement you get will almost certainly buzz sadly.

Sounds like No Competitors from your description above.... worst company ever.

If it's john lewis you bought it from - keep at them. I know people over on avforums who have gone thru 4/5/6/7/8 tv's before getting the quieter one.

My 59D6900 was silent but had terrible red hue on the screen, replaced without any major hassle from John Lewis - 2nd one is picture perfect with a "tiny" amount of buzz that is barely audible at all so it's a keeper

Don't accept any nonsense from the company - keep pushing for a replacement.

It's neither of those retailers I'm afraid, it's the other one that people often mistake for a falling star.

When I called them back to ask for another replacement they quoted that they do not accept this is a fault with the tv and they won't replace it for another plasma, only lcd/led (which I don't want) or my money back (which is not enough to buy any other plasma of similar size, not by a mile). Otherwise I can take it up with Samsung.

I don't think they are right in doing this, especially if samsung says that the tv is faulty again, but I'm really exasperated of going through this again and possibly getting a worse one still!

I'll try to see if samsung can send any engineers or do any repairs to sort it out (I think they can swap the back plate until they get it fixed?).

Anyway, if I find a solution to this I'll let you know! (don't hold your breath).

Write to Watchdog?

Sounds like something they would like to hear!

I'll think of that. The problem is that I don't believe I can get further with Comet as what they'll do is to insist on sending their engineer around and I know that he will just confirm their (what appears to be) policy of not finding fault. I've read around on the net of people having similar experiences with the engineers apparently being deaf when it comes to tv fault noises.

Anyway, I will chase this up (or get used to the buzz!) but it disheartens me that I know in all likelihood I'll get another buzzer even if I return this one. It's sad that Samsung can't just fix it with a firmware update or something, it must be costing them heaploads of money with all the returns.

It saddens me to hear of this kind of thing going on,both Comet and Samsung should hang their heads in shame!!
They should also take some lessons from the famous highway robber Dick Turpin.....at least he had the common decency to wear a mask.

Just thought I'd add a bit of news to this.

Samsung has told me (in writing) that the retailer in question buys TVs off them _without_ warranty at all.

No wonder the retailer tries their outmost to shut down any question about replacement.

Or is that standard practice among retailers? I don't really know.

When I worked for Philips this this was common with the supermarkets. However, it was usually confined to the cheap bulk shipments from China.

As a manufacturer it saved us a load of hassle dealing with No Fault Found returns. That's when a customer returns the goods to the supermarket as faulty, but the supermarket staff don't check. There would be stupid reasons like the remote's batteries ran out or not wiring up correctly. This No Returns policy gave the retailer a couple of extra percent discount and shielded us from all the hassle. I'm surprised a retailer would take this line with big TVs though. It seems very shortsighted to me.

Take the refund!

Then you have three options:

1. buy the same TV elsewhere and play the returns game until you got one that doesn't buzz.
2. buy a smaller quality plasma as you've just discovered size isn't everything
3. save the extra cash and buy a quality plasma of the desired size

I can't see any reason why you would settle for this buzzing monstrosity and I really couldn't be bothered with the hastle of swapping out a TV until I got an acceptable one.

Option (1) might be a good idea. I don't want to downsize as size is important (the next plasma I could afford would be 51'', which is a big difference from 59''). Option (3) is out of the question as I can't justify spending £2.5k for a Panasonic 55'' which is the next step up.

However (1) is tempting and I'll consider it. The only thing keeping me off doing it is that I got a good 10% discount on it already, and adding a £100 restocking fee that the retailer will charge me on top of it (they will not accept it's faulty) means I'll need to pay an extra £300 for the same TV.

Really can't say I've ever notice my panasonic buzzing :(

Surely they can't be sold "without warranty" consumer rights and everything.
TBH I'd do my best to get it flat out returned with a full refund and take my money elsewhere

Check the law around restocking fee tho mate

Agreed - restocking fee is a joke - if the tv is "defective" how can they restock it and then sell it again!

I expect the restocking fee to apply because the retailer will not accept the TV is faulty. They claim that all plasma's "buzz". I've read accounts of their engineers playing deaf on house visits to shy away from responsibility for replacing. I would expect the same to happen tbh given their persistence on sending their engineer even though Samsung authorised a free replacement + delivery/pickup fees.

That is my assumption, I cannot tell for sure.

How did you pay for it?

I bought it over the telephone using gift cards (a complicated way to get advantage of a 10% offer which had to be transferred first into a gift card to qualify for web-exclusives).

all in all I think I'm beginning to get used to the buzz and not notice it as much and I'm wondering if all the hussle is worth it. Haven't made up my mind completely but it is bugging me.

maybe I can use it as an excuse to the missus to upgrade to a 2012 or 2013 model sometime in the future and put this in the bedroom..

I've never noticed my Panasonic ST30 buzzing, and I sit pretty close as well.

The Panasonic's don't buzz. Only the Samsung ones have this defect.

We are not talking about the normal low humming of the TV in operation that you can hear when putting your ear next to it. We are talking about an omnidirectional buzz that you can hear while sitting at your couch 3 1/2 metres away over a sound level of 8-9 (unless you become used to is and stop noticing it).

Does anyone know if the PS51D6900 also has this problem? I am currently debating between that and the Panasonic 50GT30.

I've returned many things to many places under DSR, never been charged a "restocking fee"

DSR is mainly for the intial 7 days for a buyer to view the items as they would in a store, you have to advise the seller you are returning it under DSR WITHIN 7 days.

Sounds like OP needs to look into the SoGA

EDIT: Jesus my typing is failing badly lol
