My coolant level sensor has started misbehaving. It comes on and off at various points of my journey. Generally it comes on when the car warms up, it tends to go back off again randomly.

The coolant level is already at its max level so I don't want to top it up any more. Could this be a faulty sensor? The car is due an inspection I at BMW over the next couple of weeks.

I had this a few months ago on my 330ci, but my coolant was actually low, after topping it up the light never came on again. Could just be a faulty sensor in your case.

Almost certainly a faulty sensor if it comes on and off reguarly... unless your actually low on coolant lol

Its an easy one to troubleshoot though, the washer bottle has the same sensor, so just swap them over :)

Really, cool might give that a try.

Faulty sensor or the coolant res cap not tightened properly :p

Mine was not tight enough once and coolant levels dropped! (the light came on one day and went away then back on a few days later).

Just an update to this.

I replaced the coolant level sensor and it didn't fix the problem, however I asked the garage to check it out when in went in for its interim service, they did some pressure tests and couldn't find out why the light kept coming on.

So I got the car back after the service expecting the light to come back on. However in the 3 days since the service it has not.

Maybe the pressure test sorted it? Maybe the service indicator reset fixed it? Maybe it was a mixture of everything. I really have no idea and neither do the garage.

But its nice to have a dash back without any warnings :)

Maybe it will just come back on after a few days :p

I have a feeling I need a new bush set all around (floaty feeling at high speed, tapping noise from the suspension/wheel area at low speed when going over rough road) and control arms for them too. +£300 but at least they last an absolute age though so not an annual addition to maintenance.

You take a 330ci to BMW for service????

Indys are barely any cheaper.

My indy wants 190+vat on a 530i E39 INSP1.

Dealer on maindealerdiscount wants 199 all in.....

Obviously you're going to get the people going they don't want their cars trashed, a junior monkey working on it etc etc etc,, all those excuses.

But IMO you'd be daft not to.
