You hear this happening to others many times but you never think it will happen to you. Thankfully it wasn't for that much but because I checked my online banking the day after, the transaction stood out.

£9.99 from buymobilephones.net

This was on 6th Jan, I rang up my bank and they said they will investigate and call me back.

Today I notice a further two transactions:

£20 OPCS Pay As You Go

£1 Phones 4 U

I have rang and spoken to my bank again and they have now cancelled the card and issued out a new one.

I rang buymobilephones and they have non of my details on record. The OPCS after some googling shows up as Orange PAYG? I have never been on Orange so that 100% confirms for me there is something dodgy going on. The £1 from phones 4 u, what will that be for? I checked with my bank to make sure no direct debits have been set up but is it likely that someone might have been trying to take a contract out on my name?

A few years back when I had money going out to so many different places and hardly kept track of my finances, I probably would not have even noticed these small amounts going out.

Anyone been in a similar situation? Is there anything else I need to do? Card has been destroyed and new one should be with me soon.

When I worked at phones4u we could do a 1 proof which means you can take out a contract with just your card, no proof of address. It would take £1 and then refund it.
So if someone had your card, put your address on the contract they could take out a contract in your name/address.

So someone has been checking to see if they can take out a contract in my name? The transaction shows up under todays date and my card has now been cancelled. I rang phones4u and enquired, they could not find my details anywhere on their system which was a relief I suppose. Is there anything else I can do?

Double check, I'd ring in a couple of days as their system might take a while to show your info.

The above is all unfortunately correct. Your card details have been comprimised and the fraudsters are likely checking if the details work, which they evidently do.

You may find in a week or so that you receive some welcome letters for mobile phone companies. What the fraudsters will have done, if they have indeed done anything, is to take contracts out in store with your details in order to obtain some nice new smartphones.

The other thing which they may have done, which I hope they have not, is to open accounts online, in which case the smartphones will be on the way to your address. They will then attempt to intercept them upon delivery by pretending to be you.

On a related side note, I had a call from my bank Natwest today, to check whether £300 of Eurolines bookings were in fact made by me on my credit card. They were, but its good to know they keep an eye out. :)

Had my card cloned or something while on holiday a couple of years back. My bank were very helpful returning the money that was taken fraudulently, along with everything we had spent on holiday. Couldn't believe it, considered keeping it, spent weeks trying to give it back!

A few years ago I had a card compromised and they emptied the whole account over a few days from atm withdrawals all over Italy :p

Once the card has been cancelled that's all you need to do for now, but as suggested in a few days I would check again with those companies that no accounts have been set up with your details.

Like others have said mate it may take a few days to appear, the only way would be is if you called a branch and ask if anyone has tried to take out a contact under the name of your name, or it may have been declined by the network so they may not have managed to take it out after all.

I will do thanks.

I rang phones4u again and this time clearly warned them that I think someone might be using my details to take a contract out. The lady I spoke too was very helpful, she took all of my details and has fwd them to their security dept who will investigate and be in touch with me.

If it turns out someone has taken out a contract, should I be expecting the delivery of a handset in the next few days or will they have just picked it up in store? Or could they have had it delivered to another address? If anything comes to my home address I will be on the look out for anyone hanging around hoping to try and intercept it, the thieving ****.

This is incredibly weird, firstly to clarify, I live with my grandparents. A package came today, delivered by Yodel, it had my grandmothers name on the front and obviously our address as well. She has been out all day, so I opened the package which is what we normally do anyway, checked inside and there was a Blackberry and an O2 simcard. Knowing full well that she wouldn't have bought this I rang her up and asked her about it to which she replied that she didn't know anything about it.

Then shortly after I received another phonecall from a woman, saying that we had received a parcel of hers and that she would be round tomorrow to pick it up. Stupidly I didn't quiz her on who she was and why the hell she was ordering things to our house under my grandmothers name.

Gave the police a call and two officers just came up, took the phone with them and gave us a few different explanations as to what it might have been. They left me an incident number and said if the person shows up tomorrow to collect the package that I'm to dial 999 immediately and give the incident number. My nan has two bank accounts, she's checked the one and there's no suspicious activity, I think she's in the process of checking the other one right now.

I just find it really strange that the OP has a crime/potential crime involving mobile phones and then this random Blackberry rocks up at my house. :/

Must be that time of the year... :p

Well if it's a store and it went through the phone would have been taken from the store. I'm not sure how it would appear on your card if it would be say P4U Aldershot or just Phones4u so couldn't answer you on that one mate, sorry. Again I'm not sure about delivery to a different address either ( if they did it online )

I got stitched up for 2 lots of £298 something. Lucky I was checking my online banking regulary. I phoned up Nationwide and said it wasn't transactions that I had authorised (I googled the bogus name that the money was paid to to no avail).

I had to fill out a form and they refunded me the money in about 3 weeks. Good job I was living at home with the folks at the time.

Been a lot of fraud floating around recently, just make sure you check your statements for any weird transactions. - Keep your details safe. :)

If your banking is any good they should call you if a large sum is being moved. This happened to me last month (just before xmas - thanks a lot! ) they tried to move £1400 out of my account. Halifax were good and called me up. Gits.

She will come round mate. Make sure you are there as she could get quite aggresive. Just tell her the Police have been round and watch her run.

I spend plenty of time in the last couple of years working on fraud rings with a big mobile phone company. This is unfortunately much more commonplace than people realise.

When she comes round be smart to keep her waiting, say you need to go get the key to open up the door, go and ring the police and then pretend to find the key. And then open the door, ask her why it had your grandmothers name on it. Then when she finishes answering the police should arrive :)
