Hi Guys :)

Rebuilding an older machine on the cheap. It will be running an old D820 dual-core cpu, Gigabyte P41T-D3P, HD6570 and some Kingston Hyper-D DDR3.
The machine will not be overclocked or used for heavy gaming, just windows 7 and all the basic stuff like word, accounts, web browsing. Maybe some media stuff like video, youtube etc.

Will the OcUK Swift 550watt V2 be ok? Bit concerned with the lack of connectors but then its a cheap psu so cant really complain, or should I go further up the scale? I recently bought a B-Quiet 530watt from ocuk but that particular model is no longer available.

Thx.

I agree with stulid.

I went down the road of buying a cheap atx psu from a local pc store for £15 and it took my pc with it 2 months later. Over £200 in damage! New motherboard, new ram and new hdd! But this was about 5 years ago!

Get what stulid has linked too. The Corsair Builder Series PSU's are awesome!

Agree word for word, NEVER skimp on the PSU ;)

Who needs that amount of AMP anyways if the PC is a HTPC and not a gaming rig, but for the price, I guess you cannot really complain!

For under £40, you can't go wrong with the corsair 430w. The coolermaster isn't worth the £10 saving imo. I've popped the corsair 430's in all of my works machines and they haven't skipped a beat.

The GX 450W is decent for the price and in terms of quality is no worse than most PSUs under £40. The high end and midrange Coolermaster PSUs tend to get decent reviews - it is the very low ones such as the Elite series which are average.

For you purposes the GX 450W will be fine IMHO. Every review indicates its a decent PSU for the price. The GX 450W is a more expensive PSU than the CX 430W in both the US and UK with most retailers. It just happens that OcUK and another UK retailer have them for around £30.

The GX 450W is made by Enhance Electronics - the CX 430W is based on the cheapest CWT platform. The previous generation CX 400W was made by Seasonic and based on a higher level Seasonic platform.

Both the GX 450W and CX 430W use sleeve bearing fans. However, the GX 450W tends to use Japanese primary capacitors whereas the CX 430W(the cheapest versions of the low end Enermax NAXN range are very similar) use either Taiwanese(Teapo) or Chinese(Samxon) primary capacitors. However, most of the reviews of the CX 430W are US ones and in the US the CX 430W can have upto 50% price reductions through rebates. This rebate scheme has been in place for the entire lifespan of the CX430W V1 and CX430W V2 in the US. At that price it has virtually no competition.

Both these units are made by Seasonic, have longer life ball bearing fans and Japanese capacitors:

If you are using a case with more limited ventilation get a PSU with a ball bearing fan. Sleeve bearing fans are quieter but wear out quicker.
