1.2 Punto, £24 grand for insurance.

I feel your pain.

Have a 1.2 Punto myself (I bought first then worried later for insurance) and when it came to insurance the cheapest quote I got on my own 3rd party was £4900. A lot of places like the AA aren't competitive for young drivers so they didn't even give me a quote (and this was over the phone).

The ONLY way I was able to get insured was for my mum to cancel her insurance policy on her car (09 Leon) and start again with my dad as main driver, and get my mum to be a named driver on her car and to be the main driver of mine - which meant her own insurance went up a bit, but meant I was able to get insured for £1700 - fully comp. I'm 18 btw.

I just hope next year, with 1 years NCB under my belt, I can go alone on the insurance. Don't really like the fact that my dad now has to build his NCB up when my mum has about 16 years - which meant very cheap insurance on her car.

So we can just commit fraud if we dont like how much things cost?

There are ways of not paying £4900 to insure a car without resorting to fronting.

Put words in my mouth why don't you. I know what you're saying, but I'm specifically talking about paying near as makes no difference 5K for car insurance on a car that cost £800 and I'm getting £40 a week from college and a bit of side money from work (placement which doesn't have to pay me). I still live at home and my mum does need my car occasionally - but there was no way for me to afford (literally all the money I earned) to pay car insurance without my mum as main driver. Have a little bit of sympathy? :( Theres people out there who don't have car insurance at all, or people who lie about where they live to reduce the price, or people who drink and drive, or people who continuously speed ..... You know yourself, some people shouldn't be on the road at all (and I know you're probably going to say me because of my insurance? I dunno ... )

But anyway .... I just hope it's better for me next year.

People doing worse things doesn't make something illegal better though.

Yes it's a tough situation, but it's one you'll just have to get on with and make the best of, legally. Why should you break the rules to do what others can't because they stick to the law?

Well come to think of it, I remember the insurance company saying to my mum that I was only allowed to drive after certain hours with the main drivers permission. The insurance company did know that I would be using the car more than my mum, but still allowed my mum to be main driver. The insurance company that I'm with knows when and how often I use the car.

I remember my first car, a Talbot Sunbeam one week after passing my test at 17. Insurance was steepish at £300 per year fully comp but managable.

In contrast my boss paid £86 per annum to insure his Lambo Merc last year.

Really ? My dad is 65 and pays 220 a year for a 1.8 merc , his ncb is longgggggg too.

On my way back from work earlier I left at pretty much the same time as the bus that I would have to get if I used public transport. I was back in plenty enough time to have a cup of tea and a smoke as the bus sailed past about 20 minutes later.

I didn't have any crazy old men talk to me and I didn't have to smell urine at any point during the journey! I for one reject your notion Sonny!

Regardless of how many were, I cost about 1400 a year for a 18 year old to do so...

Well no, as even at 19 I paid £1200 to insure a Mondeo in the same postcode area that now yields me 350 quid premiums on my 530i.

Very much the exception not the norm, £1400 MR2 Turbo quotes for 18 year old.
