XBOX 720 / PS4 and Wii U at E3 2012

As for the 720p v 1080p I would take 720p @ 60 fps over 1080p @ 30 fps as smooth framerates are more noticeable over higher resolution especially as most console gaming is played sat on a couch a few feet away rather than cenimitres away like on a pc

I've always been able to tell low frames or drops far easier on my PC, quite amazed at consoles on that front for some reason. Besides obvious stuff, like motion blur, there must be some sort of relatively (compared to PCs' nearly infinite configs) extremely optimised sync/limiter to the console dev-kits or something.

How about Xbox 361!

I want sexy graphics, improved AI and not a lot else! I'm not really bothered about it becoming some sort of enertainment hub for my house.

Also not bothered about motion and voice detection. Videos games are meant to be played sat down (unless it's an arcade)! ;O)

The 360 was named because it was meant to represent a complete evaluation of what they were doing but continuing in the same direction (as in literally a 360 degree turn) afaik

From what I've read, the 360 name was chosen to indicate that the gamer is at the centre of the entire experience. Nothing to do with sports tricks or such nonsense. Similarly, 1080 sounds ridiculous.

Agree to disagree I suppose. I just think the push in resolution to 1080 as standard, even if at 20-30FPS, would be better than sticking to 720p upscaled but with 60 frame.

Afaik, 30FPS has typically been the dominant option, with only the resolution ever increasing.

1080p @ 20FPS would be utterly abysmal. The current consoles have already proven that they're not nearly as capable as they'd like us to think, considering how many games struggle at sub-720p resolutions.

There's no reason for them to push games to 1080p when many people don't have the means to experience it in the first place. 720 will be the standard.

What about 720? :D

Nevermind given a few more years time, I concede it's foolish of me to expect 1080p with all the eye-candy at decent frames yet.

720 will be the standard.

Indeed, perhaps just higher quality and detail with current res, then 1080p in 2025 or around then.

I see no reason why they can't get games at 1080p next gen, my PC has a mid range card that is now 2 generations old and it can manage 1080p fine. I know there's always the temptation to sacrifice res and push for detail but really we should be able to get both.

How will game studios cope producing games for the 360/PS3 and the new next-gen consoles. Seems like a lot of work.

...they managed it before ok.

Usually devs did the new gen themselves and outsourced the last gen version to smaller developers (Tony Hawk series for example)

Not enough V-ram.

meh

It doesnt matter if its called the 720 or the xbox super-de-duper-ultra-edition. Its just a nick name of the "the next xbox" until launch.
You're missing the point, some people actually believe it will be called xbox 720, it's more than a 'nickname'.

Anyway I didn't say it 'mattered' as such, just saying that's all...

I can't imagine the next xbox being called 720 because that just sounds like it's a 720p machine. 1080 would make more sense and even then I doubt it. The funny thing is we still won't see games using 720 minimum as the standard (developers will never bother they'd rather use the processing grunt somewhere else and upscale)

It'll be something else, I'm sure of it.

I'm sure you're right, It won't even have a number in. As they are pushing the tiled 'metro' UI here there and everywhere, perhaps it'll be Xbox Metro, who knows? Guess we'll find out whenever we find out.

I seriously doubt that'll happen in the next gen as a huge number of people only have 720p capable TVs and developers would rather have more eye candy at 720p/30fps (30fps especially as the average gamer doesn't know the difference) than less at 1080.

The 360 and PS3 are capable of 1080p/60fps (Look at Wipeout for example) but few developers use it as it results in having to dial down everything else.

A lot of games now aren't even at 720p.
So i'll happily take proper 720p/60fps games with uber graphics in the next gen.
And I remember reading the next xbox will be called infinity. Only a rumour though.

New console needs to have 1080p it would be ridiculous to expect less. 3D 1080p tvs are being sold, i expect television manufacturers to be pushing console makers to create something that makes their tvs worthwhile.

They will have 1080p, the current gen already do. What i'm saying is, look at the big releases, a large portion of them actually run below 720p despite it being more than possible to have games running at that res. The reason why they lowered the res is to increase eye candy and it works, the average consumer loves it.

We're very much a niche market and not representative of the market as a whole. Most console owners likely wouldn't know the difference between 720p and 1080p, but everyone can see the difference in increased eye candy and effects as a result of keeping the res low.
