XBOX 720 / PS4 and Wii U at E3 2012

I'd be surprised if anything was mentioned on either of the next gen Sony/Microsoft consoles, I think people who think they'll be here next christmas are severely jumping the gun.

And I'm sure the next Xbox won't be called '720', they can't be that boring and predictable surely?

The naming of the new console could possibly make an amusing poll, perhaps.

Steve Ballmer (MS bigwig) is doing the keynote at the Consumer Electronics Show tonight. I hope to wake up tomorrow morning and read about the new Xbox. :D

meh

It doesnt matter if its called the 720 or the xbox super-de-duper-ultra-edition. Its just a nick name of the "the next xbox" until launch.

I doubt that the next Xbox will have a number in the name at all. They won't sell an Xbox 3, partly because it'll be next to a Playstation 4, and partly because the previous one being called the 360 makes the 3 sound crap in comparison. I can't think of another name followed by a number which they could get away with, without it sounding ridiculous.

it should be able to render full 1080p at a solid 60FPS and with a bit of AA in most cases

I seriously doubt that'll happen in the next gen as a huge number of people only have 720p capable TVs and developers would rather have more eye candy at 720p/30fps (30fps especially as the average gamer doesn't know the difference) than less at 1080.

The 360 and PS3 are capable of 1080p/60fps (Look at Wipeout for example) but few developers use it as it results in having to dial down everything else.

Eh.. Not should, more fingers-crossed that they do sufficiently step the hardware up, especially if they don't come out for several more years.

Yeah, I'm aware the current ones are capable of it, just meant that they wouldn't have to so much 'dial down' other stuff either. But again, perhaps that's too much of a leap and it'll be for the generation after next, circa 2025 or whenever.

Wasn't the 360 bit of Xbox 360 supposed to represent the circle around the X?
Not quite.

It should have been called the Xbox 2, but Microsoft decided that because people are stupid they would think the Xbox 2 wasn't as advanced as the PlayStation 3. So they decided to give the Xbox a suffix beginning with '3'. 5 minutes later down the pub and the '360' was born.

The 360 is not a stupid name, it denotes perfectly what they wanted to achieve with the console, but relating a console to 1080 as in 1080p definition is just stupid.

The thing i would love to see on the Wii U given its tablet is some dungeon crawler where the guy with the tablet is the DM and those with the other controlers are the adventurers in my mind sound epic and gives the ultimate grievieing experience.

Left for dead with someone being the AI director sounds yummy too.

sort of excited about the wii u (apart from the name) mainly for hd content including a smash bros sequel and zelda in hd. Will be out this year apparently. The update is needed for the wii as it is admittedly dated now. The other two still have life in them yet.

I disagree, i'm still very much enjoying what this generation has to offer very much. When the PS2 reached the end of its lifetime it very much felt like it; the PC had pulled miles ahead in terms of graphics (while its ahead of current consoles the gap isn't as big as it was between PS2 and PC at the time of the announcement of the PS3) and games were drying up. I feel this isn't yet the case for the current gen with the Wii only just coming into its stride and motion control/3D being a big 'new focus' for the other two (whether people like it or not)

I have found the scene stale and stagnant for a while, Consoles have reached their upper tier in graphics for this gen now, So just need to revert back to some more solid story like it used to be. Since the graphcis can no longer dazzle and astonish us. I suppose it depends what you expect from your console.

I agree the 360/PS3 are in there twilight years i.e not much more to ekk out of them, they are just holding the line till the new boys arrive.
