OK so in these two sums the answer remains the same but there are Zero's missing from the question.

11-11-11 = 989

11-11-11 = 8

I dont think I explained it correctly. The answer will always be

989 for the 1st

8 for the 2nd

you have to find out where to but the zero's in the question to get these answers so I can only manage to get

1100-110-11=988

or

1001=101-11=889

????

This is from my 12 year old neice's homework :-0

1000.1-11 -1.1=988 not 989

Really? I fail to see what method this is teaching her apart from how to try and fail over and over until getting the answer randomly. There's no method to it at all... have I finally reached the age where I can start moaning about the education system ? Wow. I got old quick.

ive got 988.999999999... if thats any good:

(1001 - 11) - 1.0000000000001
(insert as many zeros to the last one as you like)

is she supposed to use decimals or not?

Agreed. This is kind of useless and you don't really ever need that technique till A level, where I think you use it for finding roots.
I think that we should really extend gcse for another two years and make sure everyone at least has a decent knowledge in Maths and English.

It doesnt actually mention anything about decimal places in her homework but as long as the answer is

989 for the 1st

8 for the 2nd

then I dont see why not

1000.1-11 -1.1=988 not 989

So the second is definitely possible?

I've tried countless combinations

Also agree with Zefan, I don't think I'm going to come out of this with a healthier understanding of maths even if I did randomly guess the correct answer.
