game in serious trouble?

I'm more surprised that people here didn't realise how damaging pre-owned sales can be on the gaming industry.

Its an argument that can't be won by either side. Google anything about the topic and a thread like this one will appear.

Pre owned sales isn't damaging anything. Not everyone wants to purchase brand new items. This is why the digital era is here to stay.

So damaging to the industry that it's installed user base continues to increase year on year, budgets for games and launches increasing and reviews favourable for top titles.

That's because from 2010, they have had an online pass code system for sports games so it's cheaper to buy new.

That has nothing to do with my experience, as I left in 2009 when a preowned game had the same functionality as a new one and STILL people took new 99% of the time.

People dont tend to want preowned until its cheap. Which it isnt on new release games.

What utter tosh. The games are made in batches and the companies are already committed to them whether or not they things get sold. It's the nature of basic business. It doesn't matter if 100,000 copies get sold at £49.99 or £26.99, they will still get sold.

Pre-owned doesn't hurt the makers one bit. They still sold that unit. They still made their profit. Units that aren't sold at list price sit on a shelf until they are sold at whatever price and then when no one wants them any more they get written off and destroyed. The code is already written, the game is already made. The only thing any developer will lose is the cost on printing and burning a DVD!

The only thing that probably buggers things up are GOTY editions. They usually sell cheaper for a small change of packaging, crushing the price of the first prints. But usually by that time there are only a handful of them left.

People, most notably the under 18's, buying games they'd not otherwise be able to afford by reducing the price through trading in unwanted/completed games.

Ok so the user base increases. Thats fine.

Innovation, however, does not. Developers aren't getting the same amount of income they would, thus they are unable to spend money on trying new things.

But if I hadn't traded in that last game, I wouldn't be able to afford this new one.

So if I don't trade a game in I don't care about the industry, too?

Seriously, think a little further about your argument it doesn't make sense.

In my example they've sold a game they wouldnt have if the teenager wasn't able to trade in all the stuff collecting dust under his bed that he'd never have played again.

Then they need to revolutionise their income stream (subscriptions, DLC etc) in order to afford to be able to stay relevant as a company - I don't know about you but I've seen plenty of innovation in Gaming in the past 10 years, if you haven't then you've had your eyes closed in a cave with no electrical supply in North Korea.

Like I said the digital era. Has nothing to do with pre-owned but it's a place where a lot of gamers now purchase (at a extremely low price) their product.

You really don't understand.

You're right I don't. Please explain.

I think Steam is fantastic. I can't wait for the day that pre-owned is gone and everything goes digital.

So guys can i sell my old TV or am i going to have to destroy it? I don't want Samsung to be losing out on any money.

But when a brand new game is on sale in Game for £44.99, yet they are pushing the second-hand, guaranteed to work copy right next to it for £39.99, then most people will take the cheaper one.

You've got to remember that purse strings are tight at the moment, so people want the better deal. You also have to see that, from one thing we've learnt in this thread is that most of us here are proper Gamers, we've all said we rarely shop in Game.

So when you've got more casual Gamers, or Mothers buying them for children, they want the cheaper option.
