1.2 Punto, £24 grand for insurance.

shopped around a bit more today - and still no luck most of these companys refuse to give a qoute online and directed me to there websites

i tried all the ones suggested too still seems that the lowest anyone will go is around 1.6k - 2k :(

and now time for a silly question, if i go on someone elses insurance is it fronting if i use the car while they are at work?

i doubt ill be using it more than 10 hours a week. but meh better to ask and be "legal" if i can get no claims as a named driver then i may as well just go on my parents car/policy till i can:

a. get a new job/more money.
b. get a year of NCB under my belt.

just means i wont have as much freedom with the car :p

Are you ringing the insurers? I spent 3 hours ringing around, probably went through a dozen insurers until I was able to get a quote I found acceptable.

yup, most of them say they are unable to give a quote over the phone, i think the only ones that did were direct line and admiral... :(

There are options that can lower the prices that are not available online too. With Admiral specifically there is a Marital Status that covers people living with partners, and also a Co-habiting option. Adding both of these dropped about £50 (10%) off my insurance. I could only do it over the phone.

If it's actually your parent's main car and they drive it just as or more often than you do then it's not really fronting.

However very few insurers will give NCB to named drivers (Directline spring to mind) but they tend to charge based on the most "expensive" driver on the policy.

Admirial wouldnt even insure me (quote of 13k, basicly meaning for me to F off lol)

Are you adding your parents as named drivers on your quotes? (This isn't fronting)

That often helps hugely with Admiral/Elephant/Bell, though what effect it will have if your quote is 13k is another matter.

It would seem to me though that your postcode is probably quite bad, combined with being young, which you can't really get round particularly easily.

You can check your postcode rating here: http://www.carinsuranceexplained.com/car-insurance-explained/car-insurance-postcode-risk-list.html

Some pointers for the Admiral group of insurance

-Say your car is worth a lot more than it is i.e £15,000, if you do have a crash, they will only ever give you book price of the car anyways

- Add your mother and father onto the account as named drivers

- Limit your Mileage to about 5000,

-Say your car is parked on the street! Sounds silly, but it is less than if you say its parked on a driveway or in a garage

-increase the excess to £500

-If you have a job say you are a shop keeper, if not a student

-Car is fitted with an engine mobilizer, if it has a tracker, that too

-No mods (only if it genuinely doesn't have them however) adding alloys shouldn't put the price up

Try that and see how much it comes down :)

I'm 19, a quote for a 2.5 focus ST came down from 1.9k to 1.5 K from following them steps

Then ring up, and see if they can bring it down even more!

Good luck.

that s ridiculous so even if he was doing like a 40 mile journey each way at night, he would probably be cheaper getting a taxi than using his own car?

also how do they know it is him driving it at 11-5 and not his mum? if his mum took it out and forgot about the whole £100 thing, i bet he would be raging.

i would rather pay £2K+ tbh than £1.8K and £100 per night, because i think it would be worth the £200-500 to be able to use the car whenever you want.

Yeah, we roughly worked it out, is way cheaper to drive to said location, get cab home that night and then grovel a lift from Mum/Dad/a mate the next day to go and pick your car up, as they also base your renewal on how many times you've driven in those hours.

They basically say tough, the car has to have you as the registered keeper, and if it moves more than 100 yards or so during the hours (at least they let you move it a bit just in case) you're paying the extra £100, doesn't matter who it was.

And unfortunately it's a little bit more than £200-500 per year for a no-restrictions policy, especially if the car has any form of larger engine than 1L.

Nickyyy - Cheers mate will be using those tips, looking at a new car soon (will be 18 by that point) and insurance is a big factor in the choice of car.

People doing worse things doesn't make something illegal better though.

Yes it's a tough situation, but it's one you'll just have to get on with and make the best of, legally. Why should you break the rules to do what others can't because they stick to the law?

You're working on the assumption that doing something illegal is morally wrong though. Not everyone thinks like that, and everyone has the option of breaking the law if they wish to do so. Personally speaking, if a law is stupid, or if there's a valid reason to try to circumvent it, I wouldn't feel too bad about it. It's just subjective view of morality.

Insurance prices are a joke in many cases. Mine is higher than my dad's, even though he's had a couple of accidents and speeding tickets. I've had neither, and I'm 29 and been driving for 8 years, although only a few years of NCB. It's a **** take.

i would be happy with a 1.2 ANYTHING @ a 1k max insurance price, at least that way i could get out and find a job somewhere thats not here ( **** hole place) basicly i just need a crappy run about to last me untill i get a job :p easier said than done.

1k just passing your test is a bit unrealistic dude, last year I paid 1.1k and I was turning 19 with 1NCB and 1 years named driving exp.

You will be lucky to get anything below 1.5K :(

i know i was just saying :p i guess the sooner i can get it the cheaper it will be, before it goes up next year and so on

The higher the value the higher the quote - they seem to have thresholds which once you move over, it increases the premium.

-If you have a job say you are a shop keeper, if not a student

Only if you actually ARE a shop keeper!

In some cases that may apply, but this simply isn't one of them.

Regardless of the way you feel about it, why should you not pay the costs just because you don't have the money, when the remaining 99.9999% of us work hard to pay it. Even without the law side of it, it's morally wrong because you're unfairly gaining over everybody else.

Not true, go onto admiral and try it. Put your car is worth 3K and then 15K

Only if you actually ARE a shop keeper!

Touché, most 17 year olds part time jobs involve working in some sort of shop/retail environment though :P
