I fail to see how this is any different to the kind of torture that happens frequently in abbatoirs, yet people are getting mad.:

Well of course, this has no apparent motive, although one obviously exists, while the other is usually ignored, played down, or rendered socially acceptable because we then eat it.
Edit: Perhaps I find it difficult/pointless to become emotionally affected by this incident when we allow millions of our own species to die from starvation, disease and war. I see people becoming enraged over the act of a single, potential, madman, compared with the ongoing suffering of our own species. While I'm not one to say "it's just a horse" as I believe life is sacred whatever form, calling for the mutilation of the individual who did this, becoming emotionally distraught is not going to solve any problems and almost takes the ****.
