Government changes Free School model funding agreement to ban creationist schools.

Yawn.

Can't we just teach kids the facts as we currently know them, and a range of theories to that interpret the facts including the theory of evolution and the theory of creationism, and then let the kids be free to make up their own minds on which to believe?

Teaching them only one theory (be it evolution or creationism) seems a bit brain-washing to me.

I agree - teach them to think for themselves and they'll come to the most credible theories/facts for themselves.

Nothing about this existence is certain enough to teach it as absolute anyhow.

It's this sort of big government, nanny state interference that resulted in Free Schools being introduced in the first place.

If evolution was a theory in the same way that creationism is a theory, then your point would be valid.

However, the "theory" of evolution uses the word "theory" in its true sense (i.e. a coherent group of tested general propositions, commonly regarded as correct, that can be used as principles of explanation and prediction for a class of phenomena) - whereas the "theory" of creationism uses the word theory in its idiom form (i.e. in theory, ideally; hypothetically).

Therefore one of these is regarded within the general community as "correct" based on a TON of evidence, with more coming in everyday, and nothing to dispute it. Whereas the the other is based on religious peoples very over-active imaginations, with ZERO evidence to back it up, and is regarded as "crackpot" by most rational thinking people.

So, no, we can't just teach kids every crackpot crazy idea someone has dreampt up, and then teach them the reality of life in the middle, and tell them to "just pick one". That, my friend, is crazy.

Forcing schools to teach science in science lessons is being a 'nanny state'?

Of course I'm not serious. Just pointing out that since the point of Free Schools is so that parents who disagree with the way schools in their area are run, can set up their own school according to the way they think their kids should be taught. I believe Toby Young's free school in London for example will not teach ICT in any way shape or form, concentrating on Latin instead. It's inevitable that you'll get these conflicts between what parents think should be taught, and what actually should be taught.

Good news. People and parents shouldn't be allowed to warp their children and intentionally stultify them by teaching them things that are simply not true, just because they had the same thing done to them.

(I'm not a libertarian). :p

Indeed.

It's about time.

Parents don't own children - they don't have to the right to indoctrinate anybody into a cult, no matter how popular it may be.

Why is evolution even refered to as a 'theory' these days? Even natural selection has very strong evidence so why we refer to that as a 'theory' aswel is a mystery to me.

Got to stop appeasing the religions........

Good.

Creationism shouldn't be considered in the same building as evoluion. It's not a case of hearing both sides of a story, because there isn't two sides.

Science with a science hat on, religious study with a religious hat on.

Interesting - I didn't think this was even a problem in the UK... USA yes, creationism is being forced on too many kids - but in the UK

Despite my personal views (atheist who's strongly against organised religion, but not fussed what anyone wants to believe as long as they don't force their views on others)... I think this is a bad idea.

People should be presented with all the "options" available to make an informed decision on their own... not taught one way or the other.

Whilst I can't and will never be able to accept the concept of creationism, that linked to its source (a higher power), is something I would love to believe in... it would make life a lot less pointless and I can see how believing in that gives people comfort and helps them deal with life in general. This could have an effect on taking that away from people, which isn't right.

The fact you have put the 'theory of creation' on par with the 'scientific theory of evolution' makes me very upset.

A scientific theory != any old theory.
