New life begins

Glad it's working out for you mate, I expect to see a new post in the "post your gf" thread eventually, and then the transformation is complete! :p

Excellent news, well done on making the move. I remember reading your thread when it was put up and couldn't actually believe what I was reading in that someone could be so cold-hearted :(.

All the best for the future sir

Well done. It's definitely the right decision to go ahead with the move. You can always move back again but if you hadn't gone out there then you'd always regret it and wonder "what if?".

Jealous :(

Me and the missus are seriously thinking about moving abroad. Thinking Canada though with our youngest only 6 month we will probably wait a few years until he is 3 or 4 before giving it some more consideration.

How did you start your job search in NZ out of interest?

Well It's a bit iffy doing it from the UK just in case they want to do some interviews. I first emailed a few companies that I knew of in NZ, then hit there job search site "seek" and applied for say 150+ jobs like you do in the UK haha. Then this one I'm at replied back and there you go. It was on pure chance to get the job before I went. If I didn't, I would have still gone anyway and gone round each company I contacted and so flying by the seat of my pants approach. You need a kick ass covering letter to be in for the winning. Like most companies, you need to be noticed.

Congrats buddy, I remember your thread last year, you've made the right choice.

Moving to another country is something I wish to do, what sort of salary are you on in NZ for the job you are doing and what is the cost of living like if you don't mind me asking?

Now the cost of living is all dependant on what you want really. I could safely eat out every night and I would spend less money than cooking at home. With my wages, I can live with a few bits of dosh left over for lavish spending etc. To be honest, I'm not on a very high wage but it's better than nothing and now life is good.

Nice to hear a good luck story for once, well done candyman. I suggest you stay there by the way!

I indend to live my days out here as best I can and only visit the UK on holiday to see my family!

If the OP doesn't mind, perhaps I can partially answer that one. Salaries used to be lower than the UK for similar roles but that has definitely changed now due to increased salaries and the pound taking a battering. My wife and I both earn more than we did in the UK.

and what is the cost of living like if you don't mind me asking?

Auckland is an expensive city particularly for rent/mortgage. Prices for a 3/4 bedroom house are probably between $650k - $1m+ for the nicer parts of town (i.e. not South Auckland). Of course, this will vary by suburb but even the 'just ok' areas are fairly expensive.

Some food and drink is generally more expensive as well. A loaf of bread is $5.50 for instance yet fruit and veg tends to be the same or slightly cheaper (Note : New Zealand is very seasonal so prices fluctuate wildly). I might actually look at some proper stats to see how it compares to the UK. My feeling is that it's probably comparable when buying from the supermarket and slightly cheaper when eating out.

Anyway, don't know if any of that was any use as it's not particularly scientific :o

So when people say "hovis or it's not real", you have to weigh up whether it's really worth it to prove your point?
