I want to upgrade my graphic card soon, I've been holding off on upgrading it for a bit and looking at 7970, they're interesting but do I really need it? I only game at 1080p and I have no plans to go multiple monitors or 3D so 7970 seems a bit overkill (and the pricing doesn't help, but I guess that'll go down sometime.)

I have no issues with my 5850, it's capable of running latest games with high settings (not at max settings on all games though, which is what I'm aiming for) and I have a spare PC with some lowly graphic card so I want to stick 5850 in that and get a new card for my main rig.

Recommend me a card, I prefer ATi due to the stuff I do that takes advantage of ATi cards (Bitcoin mining and hashing stuff), maybe a budget of £300? (Not really an issue, I could get a 7970 if I wanted to but I can't really justify the price.)

I was thinking of 6970 Twin Frozr III? £263.99 on this week offer, seems like an amazing card from the reviews I've read, and I've had pleasant experience with Twin Frozr coolers.

Wouldn't say no Nvidia cards though, but with my budget, getting me to buy a 580 won't be an easy task. :P

By the looks of the posts here, it looks like I've made the right choice, ordered it yesterday.

I will be receiving it today, I'll be taking pictures and compare the size & performance between 5850 and 6970 (this is assuming I don't forget. :P)

Ah well...too late I guess. I really think you would be best wait for 7950 1.5GB...

The amount of extra performance of 6970 over 5850 isn't worth it if you consider the cost vs gain. You'd be better off going crossfire 5850 (if you don't mind the possible driver issue and have a good enough PSU) and get much more performance for less cost. But as I said, 7950 1.5GB would had worth waiting for...

There is always DSR :p but I'll probably keep it anyway.

I thought about 7950, but looking at the cost and performance of 7970, more expensive and faster than 580, 7950 is going to be in between and at a lower price point I guess, that makes 6970 not too far behind. (Of course, I could be wrong, we don't know the exact price of 7950 and I don't think there's any benchmark for it yet.)

It's still a decent card though.

Could wait for some more info to trickle in though, no doubt it will still be hugely expensive. The 6970 will definitely hold it's own at that res for several years to come!

I know Furmark isn't the best way to test.

I played some Serious Sam 3 and Crysis, temp reached 75c, surely this can't be right? Airflow isn't really an issue as you can see in the photo, and 5850 didn't even reach that high.

Apart from opening up the card and reapply paste, what can I do?
