got 30 pounds (not for me, asking for a mate) what the best soundcard on a budget? board is ASRock N68C-S UCC, got a gt220 graphics card in, so whats a good one to get? preferably new but not too fussed where from, fleabay or here, wherever really. main uses of pc: gaming, web surfing, word processing, DTP etc. and listening to music so. thanks
ste!

are they good for gaming? thats the sole intention to be honest, and is that only 5.1? was hoping for 7.1 but if its the best value for money ill tell him to get it! thanks

spot on mate!
also, whats a good 20+ inch monitor for gaming?
got around 100-120ish he said, preferably with good inbuilt speakers due to space, currently looking at a 20" for 100 but thought i could do better asking here, whats a popular gaming monitor preferably 23" for 120 or less? thanks guys.
also, what are your opinions on 3d monitors?

Xonar DG is the only widely available card worth considering at that price point. Definitely the one to go for it using headphones.

Also look out for the Soundblaster SB0770. It's an OEM card that's as capable as X-Fis in the £55+ range. Gaming compatibility and hardware sound capablilty is marginally better than the DG and it has 7.1 analogue out.

i have the Xonar DG and i can tell you it's a pretty damn good soundcard for the the price. match it with a pair of decent headphones and your mate will be well happy

headphones?

why would he need decent headphones? was going to be using speakers... thanks!
and naw not at the moment no but was thinking of getting a 7.1 set...

7.1 PC speakers are very uncommon. Creative did have the T7900's a few years ago, but there aren't any on sale ATM, not that I've seen anyway.

Unless they can be positioned correctly, there's not much point. Same applies to 5.1, but it's easier to place 5.1 speakers I'd imagine.
