The Impact of Facebook?

I bought my old ma a laptop 2 years ago and introduced her to facebook as a way of catching up and meeting all her old school mates from the 60's

She discovered Farmville and now she doesn't leave the house, im serious. I dont visit her any more, all she talks about is Farmville.

She calls me at 1 am saying her farmville is "broken" i need to come fix her laptop... its terrible.

It must be the cause for absolutely countless Domestics, Break-ups and Broken Friendships.

I think Facebook is brilliant when used properly but some people can't help but go over the top.
My best mate has recently kicked his girlfriend out because of her addiction to Facebook and having to write everything about their life on there.
When I asked him if he was OK about 3 months ago he said "I've never had a relationship that has involved something like Facebook before".
He has constantly begged her not to write stuff like 'I love making up with my man' or 'Going on holiday in 17 days and 5 hours' and other such stuff but she can't stop.
He kicked her out about a month ago and she still can't help posting stuff like 'Here's hoping this year will be better' or 'Lets hope I can find somebody better' and other such nonsense.
I told him to update his status to 'Lets hope I can get a girlfriend who can keep all my private stuff off Facebook' but he won't do it.

Fact is its only going to get worse, friends have let there 10 year old kids have accounts, high school girls with those duck face poses, absolutely mental, letting a kid on there.

I won't post anything detailed, but suffice to say that fb caused a lot of trouble in my social circle over new year, resulting in physical violence. I wouldn't be surprised if there isn't a police raid as a result either. People are idiots but it makes things escalate beyond what they should ...

Facebook?

It will be Google+ in 5 years time. You will become one with Google. Resistance is futile.

And yeah Delvis, I had Faceparty too. Never really got involved with any other social sites unless deviantART counts?

G+ is going to be binned soon you know.

I sacked facebook off in about November, so did my girlfriend (it wasn't a joint thing, we both got sick of it simultaneously).

Honestly, I don't miss it. All I ever did on there was read all the crap that everyone wrote and think how dull it was. And then keep doing that... so I packed it in and it has had absolutely zero impact on me, my life, my circle of friends, anything. My life is just the same, only I don't waste an hour a day reading bilge and simultaneously berating myself for continuing to do so.

But again, this is entirely down to how you use it. My life would change quite a lot if i ditched facebook.

So what is the difference between FB and say for example OCUK forums?

They're completely different animals.

Using Facebook for keeping in touch with friends and family is a great way to use it, but in reality most people just use it to post banal crap.

Most people misuse it horribly in my eyes.

Either way, I have nothing against Facebook as such, but I found that it didn't add anything positive to my life and annoyed me more often than not, and I think if people are honest that's quite common but they feel like they have to be a member otherwise they'll be 'left out'.

I left as an experiment and haven't really missed it.

A bit of a difference. OCUK is moderated and you can't get away with posting crap ( well most of the time). One of the reasons that I would not particularly want to use facebook is that a lot of my friends are CT nutters. CT nutters+internet does not make for a good combination. Also being anonymous somewhat makes it different.
