Best Card for now

I run BF3 at ultra with 4x AA and I find it perfectly smooth. Thats with a 4.6ghz I5 and 8GB Ram...

Is that an unlocked one to 6970? Cause there is no guarentee that he could do that is there?

Also, I don't understand why you would want two screens in bf3? Am I missing something?

Nope not unlocked no point as it makes no noticeable difference in games and not worth the hassle of voiding the warranty and stabiltiy issues. My 6950 is at the manufacturers stock settings of 840/1280...

I only have one screen..

Is it rly that big an upgrade from my current card? that is my last question....

(I run 2 screens but obviously only run BF3 on 1 screen, just have sites/chat/vent up on other screen at same time. Defo seems to have an effect on performance.)

? I meant it's not worth it, that's the reason I still have my 5850...in fact I'm pretty sure it's faster than a 6950 since I have mind clocked to 1GHz.

my 5970 is clocked to 875GPU clock and 1250Memory Clock..... any higher and i get screen flicker. Not this is only through the catalyst control centre. Any tips? :P

Or should i take this line of questioning over to the OCing forums? xx

Good to see there are still some 5850 owners around :). What cooling you using to get your 5850 to 1ghz mate? Mine will only go 810/1000 at stock volts but i have a stable profile of 900/1000 with 1.125v

I have never thought of overclocking the GPU memory does it actually give any real performance boost? is there a way to test a memory clock for stability?

Cool i was actually looking at one of those not so long ago but with my current board i think the size would block my front panel connecters at the bottom of my board. What are the vram heatsinks like you get with it? Do they stick to the chips pretty well?

yes it's a good cooler and the sinks stick great provided you clean the chips first with isopropyl.

Anyway as to the OP, a 6950 would be a downgrade from a 5970....just make sure no deferred AA is enabled, and put textures and shadows on high instead of ultra.

For me BF3 at ultra 1080p is using around 1280mb of vram. I noticed quite a big difference going from a 1GB 5850 to a 2GB 6950...

It won't be.

I noticed quite a big difference going from a 1GB 5850 to a 2GB 6950...

I came from a 5870 @980MHz to a 2Gb 6950, even at stock the 6950 plays games better with higher minimums and much less dips, better tessellation too, it won't be far behind, but it won't be faster.

Then when the 6950 unlocks the extra shaders and oc'd to 1GHz, it's going past a stock 580.

6950 unlocked makes nigh on no difference and it is not even remotely as quick as a 580 even at stock...

A pair of 6950's is quicker than a 580 and still outperforms a 7970 in a lot of games.
