UK gas prices set to fall?

Hah.

The one thing that annoys me with energy companies is:

I pay by Direct Debit, one account is pretty much spot on with the monthly DD payment (eg. no extra to pay and no over payment) yet my other account is now £170 in credit, yet when I enquire about lowering my payment as it is obviously too high, I get told I cannot do this......

If it was the other way round I would have no choice but to up my monthly DD payment.

The DD strategy employed by utility companies should be criminalised.

That's why I won't pay by monthly direct debit.

Unfortunately its increasingly difficult not to pay by Direct Debit, especially when switching companies; in addition to which you get charged more for the privilege.

Monthly direct debit = 6% discount

Pay when receive bill (quarterly variable direct debit) = 4% discount

Pay when receive bill (Prompt payment) = 2.5% discount

I had some utility company come round offering me some kind of smart meter, so that I'd only be billed each month for what I paid. One of the sales chap's arguments was that the utility companies make a fortune in interest on the billions of direct debit payments they take and hang on to for ages.

I'd be prepared to bet that any utility company doing his way would just have higher standing charges or higher rates, so they'd make much the same amount of money either way.

We nagged Scottish Power something chronic about this, as we were hugely in credit one time - nearly £300 I think. They said we could have the money back or reduce our direct debit, but not both. Scum!

Not much UK gas is from Russia AFAIK, most is either from the North Sea or soon to be imported from the middle east. A huge proportion of some european nations gas is however (excluding places like Holland, Norway and maybe Denmark).

Yes the would need to be, however there are already projects under way in Wales for this, with tankers from the Middle east.

Isle of Grain is one of the UK's main LNG terminals and takes LNG from all over the world. Always room for expansion though as we're importing more and more LNG.

are that many people really that bothered by a 24 quid a year saving?

Its nice that its going down but its not going to change most peoples lives here.

I think people are more bothered that its only a 5% decrease, after the - in some places - 20% increase earlier :p.

The long term goal should be towards energy efficient housing and solar/wind self power. I'd love to just cut out these crappy cartels completely.

yeah right, this is how british gas and the energy price cartel make their money, price goes up immediately raise prices

price goes down, don't do a thing and pocket the difference

Thieving scum!

To be fair, not all the companies did that. EDF were the last to raise their prices well after the rest and, now, they are the first to lower them again.

Do I think the rises went over and above the actual cost to the supplier? Yep, but I also believe in giving credit where it is due even if it still leaves me worse off than before. I would be happier if they dropped them more but the fact is, they are the company that is prompting the rest to think about doing the same...For this, I am happy with EDF.

It's likely prices will have dropped by 20% by summer, gas price trends are likely to stay low due to a glut of gas coming on stream in the next few years from shale gas all over the place.
