Need to get my wife out if work, at the moment she gets up at 5.30 every day gets herself ready then gets the kids up 6.15, gets them ready then in the car for 6.45 then off to work 40 miles away with the kids, drops the kids off at the nursery at her work, works till 4 then reverse home.

She's shattered every night and after tax ni nursery fees diesel running costs etc she comes home with 600 a month

She has a protestant work ethic, she thinks she's lucky to have a job, tip the hat to the gaffer, yes sir no sir they ask her to work late she dares say no, even though she has a science degree and has worked her way from laboratory assistant to head of a microbiology lab for GSK

I want her to sit back a bit and take it easy but she wants to earn money, I'm thinking she should start an eBay business and have mentioned it but we can't come up with anything for her to sell or where to get started.

Reading here, find a niche, find a supplier, negotiate and sell however I need some more specifics, where to grab an idea on what to sell or just some helpful pointers.

Thanks

The best idea is the most simple idea (eBay, Facebook, the zip, etc) ... you need to think of a simple one yourself !

A friend of mines sister years ago used to buy eBay items that were incorrectly/poorly listed and relist them making some cash. Sometimes it was a little, sometimes a lot. Scour car boots and sell stuff that gets higher prices maybe...

You sir, are a very lucky man.

What exactly is the problem ? Most females these days are either bone idle, housewives (for various reasons) - or in dead-end jobs that pay little or no money compared to their male counterparts. And if your wife still has £600 to spend after all the outlays, it's still £600 extra you both have to spend on your family and holidays..... and she has her independance, work-life and most importantly her career and self-respect that she obviously worked hard for in her early adult life to achieve.

My wife does something similar (although we both share the baby/kid/school stuff) - we work hard and "play" hard when we manage to get time off together.

I assume your wife earns in the region of £2000 a month (if my estimates for the childcare and extras are correct).
Do you honestly think she could get that easily doing Ebay sales - along with the mediocre benefits that housewives get (which are due to be cut even more of the next few years) - Do you think she is the type of woman that could just stop work and be truely happy stuck at home all day long - refreshing an ebay page every 10 minutes with little to no job satisfaction ?

My mother is a registered childminder and works from home and local nursery. Check with your local council for training or schemes that maybe running.

It is very good money, you study and it is very fulfilling especially when they are older and come back to say thank you for teaching me and raising me.

It's hard graft to make solid earnings off eBay. It's been my part-time 'occupation' for the last couple of years, I don't work hard at it but for my hours its slow returns.

She has a science degree and is head of microbiology for GSK - and you think she should stay at home and start an ebay shop?

Why not go all the way and suggest betterware catalogues.

Have you thought she may actually like working and is proud of her achievements? I think the real issue is working 40 miles away from home - can you move closer to her work? Any job opportunities in her field closer?

Thanks for the replies, it's only something we are thinking about for a break for a few years till the kids start school, we can scale back outgoings and I could take on some private work but she really doesn't want to just sit at home with the kids and vegetate.

I'm looking out for other things because she's so knackered at the end of the day it' pretty much ruling her life, it's all she thinks about, getting up at 5.30 getting the kids up it consumes her and it's ruining our relationship.

We are not going to move closer as the schools aren't as good for the kids, the area is not as nice and we'd only be moving sideways not buying bigger / better so the cost to move with all the legals / taxes / fees etc she may as well quit for a couple of years.

Not everything on Ebay is 'tat' people make good livings out there, have you looked at all, it's not just s/h car boot sale stuff.

She's looking for something closer at the moment but what she is doing is opening her career up to auditing and compliance.

Why don't you get the kids ready? What's your morning schedule?

This to be honest, why dont you take over sorting the kids for a few months, then all she has to do is go to work at crazy o clock then come home, no way I could do that for more than 2-3 months, id collapse.

If I was in your wife's position I wouldn't give up that job. Even if it was killing my soul I'd grind it out and think of the early retirement!

Why doesnt she get a job closer to home? Sounds like a normal day for most people with kids. I and my wife are in much the same situation.

Does your wife not have a say in this, you come across as a bit controlling. Little woman stay at home!

There are people out there with two or three jobs. Your situation sounds average.
