New kit collected on Monday evening.... after the long deliberation in the other thread...
Marantz SR7005 amp and UD7006 universal player..... Just for the skimmers ;)

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18358710

Had to do some rework on the cables as before I was using pre power set up for all channels, so rip out the rear interconnect and replace with speaker cables.

Can’t say I’m over impressed with the setup menu system, not very logical or clear.* So far I’ve used a manual set-up and not run the auto calibration with the microphone... I’m old school, use to doing it long hand ;)...* It was also quicker to get some sounds out that way.
Not seen it mentioned in the instruction book yet, but once the amp is plugged into the network you can visits the set up pages via the browser on the PC, much easier than stabling buttons on the remote etc.

Currently set to be 5.1 and bi-amp fronts, but I need to make a small wiring change to my speaker crossovers first. Have L+R mains as large,* no centre, sub crossover 60Hz, rears to small for now.

Seems my TV may not have audio return on the HDMI cable, as can’t get that to work yet.... still some settings to check, so it’s linked with an optical cable back to the amp.
SAT box only has SCART !!.... so have a SCART to RGB/Component lead on order from the rainforest, plus another optical for sound to link the sound in.

The BD player is just connected by HDMI, though I plan to experiment with also hooking up by 5.1 analogue for when it’s used to play SACD.* Will be interesting which method produces the better sound.

Thankfully start up speeds and disc reading is much faster than the old sharp player....
Picture quality, maybe is little better, smoother tones..... will see once I get into a few films..... Does make me think it’s asking for Projector and not a 50” Plasma ;-)))))

Amp had no problem hooking up to my NAS, and found the Twonky Media server, and played back a 16/44.1 FLAC file without issue....* Sounds quite good.*
Player also finds the NAS, and the music folders, but none of the files, not even the mp3 or WAV which it should support.....** It does find and play a MKV rip from BD disc !!...* Little strange that.

One comparison will be between either the player or the amp streaming files off the NAS vs the Linn Akurate DS.
If the difference is small then maybe the DS will go :o ...(but would raise funds for other upgrades ;)

Very first impressions on the movie sound,* from Quantum or Solace, and T3 intro’s in DTS HD-MA :- Good rear channel detail and strong effect, bass/sub is good..... Fronts seem a little weak and lacking grip/dynamics.
Really going to need the Bi-amp setup to help here.... or maybe a front power amp.

Phantom channel mode is not as good as the Linn AV pre set-ups, though could be linked to needing to drive the fronts better.
My fronts take a lot of current and are 4 ohm, so quite demanding and tricky to drive sometimes. If and when I put the screen up on the wall, I will have space to hook the centre up (Dynaudio Audience 122C).... which I have stored away at present.

For now I still will believe the Marantz playing HD sounds tracks is still not going to be better or different than the standard DTS sound my old Linn pre power produced.... we will see how well I can tune and set it up.

I’m bit of a perfectionist, and do like stuff set-up and functioning right and how I like and want it. Surprising me how much time and effort it will take getting all the details customised how I want.* I’m a technical person, but can see how some people would be baffled by it all and/or never get the most out of it or achieve a good set-up.

Wouldn't it be a good idea to edit your post with what amp you've actually bought? ;) I can read between the lines, but it would be nice to have confirmation, particularly for those just skim reading this thread.

You do know that these cables only work if the SCART socket is wired for Component video, don't you?

The only things I've come across with this butchered version of a SCART are some of the ARCAM DVD players and some Karaoke players. Everything else you're likely to come across (including Sky boxes) will be the standard SCART wiring: RGB / S-Video / Composite depending on the type of device. Sky boxes have RGB & Composite via SCART.

Connect your Sky box direct to the TV on SCART, and use optical to the amp. You don't need Sky's picture via the amp anyway.

TV sound - in the unlikely event that you want the Freeview TV tuner sound through the surround system - just hook up Optical from TV to Amp. That's all the ARC does anyway, but just via HDMI, so it's no biggie.

And BTW, I thought you'd gone for the Pioneer since you dismissed the Marantz on grounds of SACD, so it goes to show that you needed to put make & model in your original thread ;)

The SAT box is not for Sky, it’s a SAT box for a Skylink Card from Europe (Slovak TV)... It has RGB, Component and Composite available via the Scart socket, (chosen in the set-up menu) So I have ordered a Scart to 3 RCA plug Component lead, if doesn’t work I will rewire the scart plug myself...(I was too lazy to go to an electrical parts store and buy the parts and make my own ;) ......Sound is via TOSLINK

TV is also connected via TOSLINK as you suggested.... Why would I not want TV/Freeview through the amp ???
I want to make the system properly integrated, it has good video switching so trying to use.

I wanted the Marantz player because of the SACD support, and the 5.1 analogue output, matched the amp....plus a good reports of it being a top player....
The issue I had with it was the high cost... The new Pioneer players being cheaper. It’s normal advertised at 600-800 quid !!!.... Found and then done a deal locally for £489. Still expensive but hopefully no need to change it for a long time as it supports everything currently on offer. 3D, BD, SACD, DVD-A, and DNLA etc.

The Marantz amp worked, and sounded better than the Arcam on 2 channel music !!..... by all accounts Pioneer could be better at movies and worse on music than the Marantz, which suits my preference.

The amp I got for £799, (plus 2 “free” QED HDMI cables were put in the deal) which is comparable to some of the second hand Pioneers on eBay !! ...
Note a few months ago the Marantz was retailing at £1400, and was still thought to be a good bit of kit...they slashed the price shortly before Christmas, and few dealers bought a batch in.
If I had bought this all in the autumn when I first started looking and asking around it would have cost me close on 2K.... now it cost me £1288, I think I got quite good set-up and deal ?????? ....... 10-12K Linn system it’s not, but should be adequate for our film and TV usage :)

Pictures as promised :-

Ideally I want the player to sit on top of the amp. Though I guess this not going to be advisable due to heat.... will see how hot the amp gets.

DIY..... 12 inch Visaton 600 watt drive unit, sealed enclosure with active equalisation powered by Detanation DT300... 300 watt Class D amp.

I have a centre, need to put the screen up on the wall to make room for it. But we plan to swing the room around 90 degrees in the summer.
In the past with my old kit a centre was not needed, phantom mode work as well and often better. Only in a large room with a large distance between the speakers would it be essential

The Marantz perhaps isn't going to mix as well, time will tell.

That's a good point.

No need for a centre in many situations. I've run my system without a centre for years because the stereo speakers were large and capable. As a result they were virtually impossible to match with anything other than an identical single version of that same speaker - which was never gonna happen due to space and aesthetic reasons.

I've recommended the same to friends in the past and always come to the same conclusion. Many surround speaker sets don't adequately support centre performance anyway so phantom running is usually the only real answer.

I'd be interested to hear how you get on once bi-amped. Does sound like you perhaps need a bit more oomph to get the dynamics and punch to where you want them.

Is it a bit of Lack DIY love for the stand there?

Was waiting to see if someone would spot it.... It's 1 1/2 lack AV bench, then when this new monster AV box arrived I had to cut shut the centre to get the height in.

GT_J if you look at he main speakers you can see a joing in the middle, so actualy they are not true floor standers, the bottom section only holds the Xover.
I have centre that uses the sames drive units in the same cabinet volume.

What anouys me is crap mix on discs. You get concert or some films and it's mostly on the centre. So that's mono then..... You then are using half the number of drive units, means half the cone area, end up moving less air, drive unit has to work harder.... Which gives less scale and "size" of sound.
Using phantom pushes this out to left and right and puts power and scale back in.
I can see in basic systems with small speakers they won't manage and a centre will be need. When the room is redone I will install it, how often it gets used will depend on content and the tweaking I can do with the Marantz.

Rear btw are Dynaudio Audience 42's....(great little speaker) But will get changed to in wall, maybe PMC or Linn, as later won't have wall space.

Think I got most settings how I want now....
Amp updated now with AirPlay, currently it's a free update.
The App for iPad is bit basic but useable, handy as it save switching screen on for music etc.

Speakers modded back to take bi-amp.... Sound has got back a bit more of that effortless feeling, bit more control and refinement.

Not played with room EQ yet, I know from previous measurement the lounge isn't to bad.

Just tested the set-up by watching "From Paris with Love". My sub decided to behave tonight and not trip out, it has a fault normally, so got to enjoy to full effect :D ....

Have to say quite pleased with the kit, for movies it's doing well, consider how much cheaper than the previous Linn set-up I was using. ( that didn't use HD sound track, straight DTS)
Running with out centre didn't feeling like I was missing anything..... Speech was well located on the screen and easily separated from the back ground etc.

:)
