What to expect from Apple in 2012?

The Mac Pro being discontinued, just like the XServe was last year.

Not a chance... Too many big design companies need the grunt that the Mac Pro provides. It'll be updated more than anything!

As for iOS I don't think we will see iOS6. Yes I know it has increased every year but at the moment they have got it spot on (imho). This year will be about the new "iP5". I think from now on they might alternate iOS and iPhone updates with incremental increases in the phone on the OS update (like the 4S).

Can't remember who said it, but I don't think they will remove firewire anytime soon. Thunderbolt drives are few and far between (not to mention fairly expensive) so until they become a bit more mainstream I think firewire will remain

The Mac Pro line adds very little to Apple's bottom line. Apple has proven with XServe and Final Cut Pro that it is willing to exit the high-end professional market. To a company with $100 billion+ annual revenues, it's too small a market to be worth spending R&D resources on.

That is a very narrow view of the MPs market.

Just because it is itself a small market does not mean it doesn't effect the sales of other products/content creation/etc.

It will be replaced. Not even Dell et al have started shipping E5 workstations yet!

These kinds of rumours were floating about regarding the Mac Mini too. Look what happened to that.

But that comment is based on nothing. Some people probably thought iOS4 had it right. The iPhone will get left behind massively if it does not get iOS6 this year.

The smartphone market is progressing far too quickly for Apple to decide not to go for any big upgrade. Besides, part of each new iPhone is the new OS, they include a special feature (or a few) that are only on the new iPhone and they use that new iPhone to show off all the rest of the new features too.

I really don't understand the thought process behind thinking Apple won't release iOS6 this year, from various perspectives.

What do you think iOS 5 desperately lacks that iOS 6 would bring to the table?

iPhone 5 for me. Slimmer, lighter, bigger screen please.

Not terribly fussed about giving it a speed bump (although it'll undoubtedly get one).

The usual I'd imagine, maybe this fabled Apple TV set people keep rumouring?

Retina display ipad 3 is my main want!

That'll be the adaptor they're not currently shipping with the phones, which they sell for 8 quid from the Apple Store website or in the physical shops! Bought one the other day, as I've MicroUSB chargers and cables coming out of the walls, but only two Apple cables at the minute.... goes nicely in the car on the end of the HTC fast charger I bought a while back.

Nowt like them keeping the market stitched up is it?!

The i-connector is very useful and works with a range of accessories. They will include the microUSB adapter when the law comes into effect, but to be honest, I'm not sure how many people will use it when the phone can just fit on their docks and charge.

For a service that we don't even have yet and likely won't have until late 2013?

Of course it'd be nice but I don't understand the desperation for it.

Oh I thought it was being rolled out late this year, oh well. I still want a decent tethering package. 1GB for tethering is a joke. :(

We won't see LTE of NFC in the next iPhone in my opinion. NFC is the more likely of the two, but only if Apple can persuade people to use their iTunes accounts as digital wallets. Most likely there'll be a new design. I'm betting on a October release again.

iPad 3 with a A6 processor and high res display is practically a given.

iOS 6 will no doubt launch later in the year.

I'd bet my house on a 15" Macbook Air this year. I'd put similar stakes on there not being a new OS X release before 2013.

As for the TV thing, new AppleTV box yes, an actual televison not a chance. There's been literally zero evidence of this happening apart from Jobs telling his biographer he'd solved the TV problem. Everything else is just the mastaburtory fantasys of those always correct analysts.

Anyone who thinks this is not the case is living in a fantasy land.

I can't see an iPad 3 being released until mid Q3 onwards at the earliest, same with the iPhone 5.

Maybe an iOS update to 5.5 with some funky new features to keep it fresh.

MacPro when ivybridge comes out, potential refreshes for the MacbookPro and MacMini to cover this also I think.

Lion? maybe some iCloud etc improvements, but I can't see it being replaced witha whole new os.

It would, but I doubt they will to be honest. They make a small fortune from accessory companies due to the unique cable they use.

Yes but wasnt eu legislation meant o mean all mobile phone suppliers had to use the sane charge cables from a certain date?
Maybe i have gone mad, but i was sure this was to come into force soon?

why?

The auctions aren't even till the end of the year and even that I expect will be delayed a few times. I can't see there being a need in the uk till April 2013 at least.

It'd be nice if they dropped the proprietary cables and opted for micro USB instead.

Good god no, that's one thing I will miss when moving to win8, the big connector is strong enough to stand the phone up on, the amount and qaulity of docks is stunning. With so many hotels and other places having apple dock equipment. Why would you even consider removing it, for what? A £5 cable to hook upto your pc, you get with the device anyway.

Even if it was mini USB, it still wouldn't support most peripherals.

As to what they'll have this year, but lost on what they can do with ip5. Quad core but that seems a step to far for apple after only one dual core phone. LtE pointless. NFC possible. Larger screen can't see it unless they start a lower and high end phone range. Higher res, again can't see it. Slightly better camera guaranteed, new design guaranteed. But I'm a bit stuck on what ip5 can offer. Then again Depends when it would be released, if at the end of the year like 4s then maybe they will include LTE although it would likely be useless for 6minths.

Ipad3, quad core and hire res screen. Ip4s camera.

do you have any evidence to support that? Not disagreeing but would like to see something from apple or a reliable source that says so.

Although i understand your thought process I wonder if you are undervaluing the benefit apple gains by having a range of products which fulfil all business needs i.e you can't kill windows if you still need it for X function

Apple are an American company. LTE is live in the US right now and many phones in the US are already LTE-compatible.

There's been a lot of rumours floating about this year.

Apple hardly updates the Mac Pro range any more. It's 2012 and it still doesn't have Thunderbolt. Apple is a consumer-orientated mainstream company these days.

What I want to see is an upgradable desktop Mac. Something with a desktop processor and desktop GPU.

I don't mean a Xeon based Mac Pro - something without the "Pro", a "Mac" if you will.
