Would an independant Scotland be forced to join the Euro?

I dont agree, I cant see the independence vote getting enough yes votes.

That's why Salmond wants 16 and 17 year olds to be allowed to vote, so he can rile them up and they'll vote yes.

If I'd been asked if I wanted an independant Scotland at 16 I'd have voted yes but I can't say the same now at 32.

Then why no referedum until 2014....surely with such a foregone conclusion the Nationalist would want to accomplish their power grab sooner rather than later?

Because they know they wouldn't win now. Like all politicians if it looks like you aren't going to win an election you put it off as long as possible hoping something major will happen to change peoples mind... Usually at the expense of others.

Not to mention more national pride if its held on the anniversary of Bannockburn. Alex Salmonds motives may be transparent and facile, but lets hope enough people don't fall for it.

He would lose now, which is why he won't bring the referendum forwards; and he has the poor caveat that he's sticking to "his word" by holding it in the second half of the term. If he knew he'd win you can bet it would be held tomorrow. Who knows what will happen in 2014? Unless the economic downturn is reversed by then, he'll just have more rhetoric to use.

Of course....I was specifically referring to shadesofgrey's claim of a definitive yes result....

 Have you got a crystal ball I don't or are you trolling?

I lived in scotland for 10 years, I have many scottish friends plus my youngest son is scottish, his mum is a 'Ross' and so is he, which was my choice. I spend a good 3rd of my time in scotland still.

Going by the conversations I've had with them all about this the majority are going to say 'yes'.

That is what I'm baising the opinion on, sorry, I should have stated that rather than just saying yes they will.

Maybe I just know a backwards scottish demographic? But idk, kinda doubt that.

lol. This isn't even worth arguing against.

The public shouldn't be allowed to vote on things like this. There are far too many who just don't have a clue about the ramifications involved.

Like with the AV referendum. There were several people in my office who voted no for the sole reason that they didn't understand it. I just don't trust the public to make an informed decision with something so important.

Saying that i don't trust the politicians either so i guess we're screwed either way.

On a side note, if Scotland did vote yes, would we have to change the Union flag, and get rid of the white cross?

Hrm it'd probably have to change in theory. I can't see that ever happening though.

As nations we both have our own debt as it stands. So it's not take a % with us scenario.

We would have our already earned debt to contend with. :p

As far as I'm led to believe.

Scotland and the rest of the UK already have seperate debts? I think you might be mistaken the UK runs a budget deficit and has debt therefore Scotland if leaving the UK would have to take a share of the debt with it.

does anyone else not really care? As an Englishman, I think they should be allowed to leave the UK and I wish them all the best. In fact, maybe its time to break up the UK and let wales and northern ireland govern themselves too.

I can't see what the big deal is, we are supposed to be a democracy so if they want independence then they are entitled to it. Its pretty clear to me that the scots hate England and the English, so just be done with it and lets go our seperate ways.

Perhaps it was just a theoretical debt I read up on. Or misread up on, more like.

I won't pretend I know enough about the subject to argue! :p
