Thinking of buying an Octavia VRS

There is a great Mk II on briskoda for £6800. Save the extra :p

Tempted myself but given it's got some mods and the insurance quote was £1k for a stock VRS, have decided against it.

Don't think they are tbh.

I think thats just clueless traders / owners listing them wrongly.

That's probably why the "VRS" on autotrader are about 1K more expensive than the "RS".

I saw that Mk2 on briskoda as well. Very nice but £7K is too much. Can't justify spending so much money on effectively a toy at the moment. Saying that, the Mk2 insurance is about £50 cheaper than Mk1 for me but for some reason, when I mention mods on the quote, the cost shoots up from around £700 to £2K. I somehow don't think I will be doing any mods to the car.

The were launched as Octavia RS but Ford got upset and it was ammended to vRS

I bought a high mile MK2 L & K 1.8 tsi 5 months ago and it has been great so far. 76,000 miles on 08 with full main dealer history.

Autotrader, insurance companies even Skoda dealers mix and match the terms RS and vRS. In mainland Europe they are all just RS.

As for the options... Xenons would be nice and are a costly retro fit, for me they wouldn't be a deal breaker.

Rear parking sensors again would be good, you can see bugger all out of the back and its bum does stick out a bit with the large rear overhang. I don't have them but I would quite like them... just not enough to get them retrofitted.

Cruise, for me essential BUT retrofittable without too much fuss.

Other than that it is just the sunroof that was a option (and not a very popular one) which I wouldn't worry about TBH.

Update.

I finally trade my old car in and bought a new one. It's a 53 Reg with 65K on the clock and is absolutely immaculate inside out. Drives well, only problem is it's got brand new ditchfinders on the front at the moment. The car needs a cambelt/waterpump change and is getting done as part of the deal, also found a boost leak fault code which they agreed to fix. Should be either the dump valve or a leaking hose somewhere. Did not notice any lack of power on the test drive though. It went up to 80 with surprisingly little effort on the test drive.

I am well chuffed, absolutely love the colour. It looks a little bit faded in the pictures but looks a lot better in the flesh. The condition is leagues ahead of anything else that I have seen. All the other car I have seen are full of swirl marks but I could not see any on this one. The seats also look brand new. It also came with cruise control and sunroof which is a plus. Only thing I need to do is put some decent tyres and fit an after market parking sensor on it.

Are Continental Sports contact 3 any good? They seem to be pretty good value at around £100 a corner and probably is what I am going to go for. Is there any point paying extra £20 a corner for the sports contact 5 though?

Not taken any pictures but these are from the advert:

Should be collecting it after the business trip and can't wait!

Yup, will be quite difficult to sell I would imagine. Planning to run it to the ground anyway.

With another child on the way, it will only be a matter of time before I need to change to a people carrier. I will regret it for the rest of my life if I don't get something special now.

Really suits the colour of my skin though ;)

The economy wont improve by any amount really but the power will really give you a kick in the pants compared to standard. About 35bhp / 70ftlb torque extra. May not sound much but it really makes the car come alive.

I think I will wait till my wife gets familiar with the car before doing remaps. She's only on provisional and will have to drive this when she pass. For some reason, she lowers my insurance by about £150. The thought of her driving it scares me... Insurance companies don't make any sense to me sometimes.

Surely adding parking sensor would reduce premiums instead of increasing it as you are less likely to bump into something when reversing.

Nice car you got there, hope you get many good years out of it. Remember to register on briskoda, lots of helpful advice over there if you get any problems and I think they have some deal with Chris Knott insurance (or they used to), who might be worh a call about any insurance quotes with/without mods. They were cheap for me for the first few years then they started to take the biscuit a little bit.

Already on Briskoda for a few years but mainly reading as I came from a Mk2 Octavia Diesel. There are much less squeaks and rattles in the VRS compared to my Mk2 for some reason.

They don't need remapping IMO it is the handling that lets them down anyway if driven hard.
They handle well but feel quite heavy and don't change direction as well as some smaller hot hatches.
When you start to mod where do you stop?
I was happy with mine (had it 6 1/2 years) as standard.

Finally collected it today and had some pictures taken:

I have learnt a lesson the hard way. I collected it expecting it to be in the same condition as I last seen it being from a trader. Just done the paperwork, jumped in and drove off.

Turns out between me putting a deposit down and collecting it, both the near side alloy's been scratched and they've put 1.5K on the clock! It also developed a fluctuating idle. It is definitely the MAF sensor because it runs better with the sensor unplugged. Hopefully a quick clean will sort it. The mechanic who did the cambelt didn't put the insulation/belt cover back correctly and left his woolly hat in the engine bay.

Other than that, I am quite happy. I now understand what you mean by the massive bias towards understeering. I think an RARB will be going on very soon.

Have you taken these points up with the dealer? I presume they'll fix the wheels and the MAF sensor FOC?
