Scottish and i think we need an honest open discussion about all the factors before I can decide, which is something I don't think we'll get. SNP will say yes and spout whatever facts suit them and the others will say no and do the same which is unfortunate but it's politics I suppose. If i voted with my heart I would say yes, we should give it a crack but i know it will have wide implications for years to come.

Im northern irish/irish republic, (mums from north, dad from the south). I believe it should be up to the scottish people themselves to decide if they want independence. Thankfully the scottish are going about it through the democratic process. (something i still believe in) unlike here in northern ireland where certain groups tried, (and some still do) to force it by using violence.

Other nationality (second generation Australian, with English heritage on both sides of the family).

Independence now. The English occupation must end.

.... In the real world the Scottish people don't know how good they've got it. When the English stop funding Scotland then Scotland will become a 3rd world country with mountains.

I believe the disadvantages would far out way the benefits from not being united. Why would we want to be separate states on this small island? it would be better to pull resources/knowledge together and share the rewards. It really would be a negative conclusion for each state.. Britain with another armour chink in its armour and Scotland a small little nation of it's own. Scottish blood mixed with English and Welsh blood defending this island of ours, it didn't matter who was from where it's important they were there fighting together.

I vote to give them, stops us needing to bail out their bank again, theyll soon come crying for help :P

All hail william wallace :D

P.S I love the scottish highlands and would move there if i could

I vote yes, & give them there north sea oil back

( in 1991 in a backroom, the map was redrawn so as all the oil fields were classed as english territorial waters instead of scotland's )

Also to all those saying ohh what about the army, people from many former commonwealth counties can join the British army just fine e.g. republic of Ireland

Ok, there's now a poll added and hopefully the options are suitable.

However I'm not voting on it - I'd need much more information regarding the terms of any potential deal before I'd be able to express a meaningful opinion regarding the question. The right to self-determinism is important and that's why the question should be asked but what the negotiated settlement is likely to be is also important - independence may be perfectly workable or it may be so unbalanced as to make it impossible for any country to succeed with the terms. I've got no desire to see something set up for failure instantly.

I'm English born and raised, with entirely scottish roots (both sets of grandparents and my dad). I don't see any benefit to it and am in my admittedly uninformed opinion against it on principle.

Im English, British, I've never called my self English before tbh.

Do whatever winds them up the most. I love having my jackboot pressed firmly upon their subservient throats

Don't care they can do what they like, I just think Salmond is a buffoon, and it would be economical suicide for them. Sure they could wear their skirts for a week, paint their faces blue, and have a week of extravegent parties to celebrate their FREEDOM!! and independance. But then they'd be back with the begging bowl when their coffers dry up due to paying for all their freebies, while not raking in enough tax to cover it. They are stronger in the union, and the union is stronger with them in.

Don't get the small man complex that Scotland seems to portray on the whole, I generally don't care about Scotland and haven't got a supperiority complex over them, they're just another country in the united kingdom to me, and I'd wager majority of the rest of England and the union don't care either, I know it's probabley a case of the vocal minority with them, smallest proportion of Scottish people with chips on their shoulders shouting the loudest. It's just pathetic; examples of this would be them supporting other national sports teams, when they're playing against England. If England wasn't in a competition or got knocked out and Scotland were still in it, I'd support them and I've spoke to a few other people and they'd support home nations teams over anyone else, but as soon as it's England vs. Brazil, enclaves of Scotland start to looks like offshoots of Rio de Janeiro, it's silly, we really don't care, you're giving yourself far too much credit and putting too much thought in to it.

I'm Scottish and I say no.

What do we need independance for? I'm proud to be a part of the United Kingdom. We dont need to go down the same road as Southern Ireland.

It would be nothing more than a cheap novelty that would quickly lose its appeal when we found ourselves all alone in the global community.

No there is no knowing what sort of policies scotland would have towards the remainder of the UK. Scottish independence could be detrimental to England. They would do a better job of just cutting down their funding and giving them more independence in economic means. If they want to raise and spend their own taxes then I think that is reasonable. But independence is not realy the right direction, I thought that they would be combining in to the UK before they run off to the EU. Plus I doubt they could afford the EU. The EU will suck Scotland dry.

Scottish - Indifferent at the moment.

Not enough information from both side of the matter, seems just to be a slagging match at the moment rather than actual discussion over fact/stances on what would happen. But that being said its early days and without a date set we aren’t going to get anything constructive out of it yet.

After a terrible showing from the other parties in Scotland at the last election they have created a lot of support for the SNP agenda though. (I didn’t even see/hear from ANY other party trying to get my vote last year other than SNP)

I do agree with Cameron on the either YES or NO vote no in between, if big Ek thinks he has a real good cause there should be no need for a third option.

Even looking at this thread you can see how misinformed people really are, no one knows what kind of Scotland Salmond will be pressing for.
