This morning an officer knocked on the door at the crack of dawn and asked me if I knew anyone who had a satnav stolen because last night they had arrested a man and found stolen satnav devices on him. One of the devices had my address on and another (or possibly the same one) had the address of a house a few doors down.
I explained that I knew nobody who had one stolen and that 8 weeks ago a boiler engineer was round fixing the boiler so maybe he had his nicked.
Off he went after making notes.
A moment ago I received a call from another officer at the local station on my mobile (not sure how he got my mobile as I never gave details to the officer earlier today but they have ways I guess) asking the same questions as the first officer but he had no notes about the boiler engineer (bit odd for them not to share details...).
This office said they were investigating a bunch of car thefts in the area and satnavs being nicked. He confirmed that one had my address on and also the same number a few doors down. He also gave a bit more detail, the device in question had its home location set in Wiltshire. I do not know anyone in Wiltshire and more so, I do not know the people at the other number down the road either.
This is rather confusing because why would someone have my address and a house a few doors down in the satnav history? Is this some kind of crime scheme that someone was doing, stealing navs, scoping out houses that might have stuff to nick or cars to break into etc?
At least they have a man under arrest but they wouldn't give any more details on that and by all accounts it sounded like he was arrested for possession of stolen goods as opposed to stealing them. The fact that they're knocking and phoning indicates he's kept a tight lip as well.
It's a weird feeling knowing that a stranger has quite possibly been snooping around outside your home, anyone here know of anyone or experienced this kind of thing themselves?
I'm going to go knock on the door of the other house tomorrow and have a chat to see if we have anything or any person in common, see if they've had the same boiler company out to them in the recent past as well.
