Need some help.

I'm going to need to buy a front mech and it needs to be for a 3x9 setup. However, as its the first time I've actually needed to buy one I'm a little unsure which type I'll need. How do I choose?

Also, it seems that it's all 2x10 these days, it is worth switching from 3x9, what are the benefits other than maybe a tiny weight saving?

It depends on the frame but Shimano top pull is the most common. In fact I have an almost new XT 9 speed one going spare. ;)

2x9 has the advantage of more ground clearance.

See, that's part of the problem. Is the pull type determined by which direction the cable comes from? e.g. Cable from top tube and down seat post into mech = top pull and from down tube and up seat post in to mech = bottom pull?

It doesn't end there. Direct mount, dual pull, conventional, top swing, high mount, low mount, direct fit, low clamp, e-type. WTF!

Right now I'm    :o

Help! :D

Direct mount = special mounting that doesn't use a colar. Found on newer frames
E-type = Uses the BB shell to mount the mech where there is no seat post to mount the colar.
High mount = most common
low mount = where part of the frame may get in the way of high mount mech a low mount is used instead.

Most mountain bike frames are top pull. Specialized use bottom pull because they are retarded and put alll the cables at the bottom of the down tube.

You get 2 colar sizes with adaptors that will fit most frames. The one I have is 34.9 without the adaptors.

Since there is nothing on the seat tube (other than decals) to stop the mech from funtioning I could go with the following then.

Top pull, high (or low) mount to fit 34.9 seat tube.

Edit: Asuming that your spare front mech is suitable, how much are you wanting for it?

I will be buying my next bike online.
I have been cycling for years now and i know what i want from my next bike - so i dont need any advice from anybody in a bike shop.
I also know exactly what sizes/geometry i need - so i dont need to try it out beforehand.

If you are unsure about what size you'll need - go to a shop where you can try it out.

I'm going to buy my next bike from canyon, i would also use chainreactioncycles, wiggle, ribble.

I'm sure you've all seen this by now, but i dont think it's been posted in here yet(?)

Gee Atherton's new bike:

I'm not all that impressed by its looks, i hope it's fast for him tho.

-9C and about to go for a ride :/

I fagged out of riding today when I got up this morning and everything was frozen solid. Checked the weather reports for Wales and it said "feels like -4C" so I've done some jobs around the house instead. Was looking forward to getting out this weekend as I haven't been out in a few weeks, however on the plus side, I do now have speakers rigged up in my downstairs bathroom! :D
