Could the end of the world in 2012 be a self fulfilling prophecy?

I wonder if there is anyone or a collection of nutters that believe so much that they cause it to happen?

Just looking around youtube and threads here on OCUK show people are already working themselves up into a froth and it is only mid January.

No, how would. A group bring down the world.

"End of the World" can mean many different things? Particularly if you tack "as we know it" on the end. Obvious ones are nukes... sabotage of key infrastructure (internet root name servers?)... severing underwater fibre optics...

I think taking down "the internets" would make the last "global economic crisis" look like a kid who had simple broken his piggy bank.

e: what about a gold old fashioned espionage? Cause enough damage to a Western country faking a terrorist act and make it look like it was Iran/China/North Korea?

Still no.
There's been lots of. Hyped end of the worlds, when have any of those scenarios happened.

To my knowledge this is the first one that has really stirred public and imagination interest quite so much.

Do you have any idea the scope needed to End the World........

A group of nutters wouldn't be able to bring that about unless they happened to the President of the United States, the Prime Minister of Russia and the Premier of China as well have the Generals and prominent politicians of each country ....all at the same time and even then they would be hard to pushed to actually end the world.....beat it up a lot, but not end it.

The end of the World has been predicted multiple times and no-one has got it right yet, eventually someone will be right but I rather suspect it'll be about the same point as the Earth gets engulfed by the Sun. Whether humans are still on the planet by that point is perhaps a more pertinent question to some but given we've barely been here for the blink of an eye in cosmic terms it's probably a bit too early to predict with any accuracy.

Fortunately most of the people who believe the World is likely to end don't have access to any levers of power with which they could attempt to bring about the "end of the World as we know it" - you'd also be right to argue that if there's powers at work to bring about the end of the World then they shouldn't need help from a small collection of people who've got a predictive accuracy that makes the average horoscope look like the equivalent of a fait accompli.

You do not remember Y2K, do you? Because that was 100 times worst ... And all the mess on 999 a.c., that was something. :p
