Hey everyone.

I recently applied for a MSc in Chemistry at the University of Leicester and have been (conditionally) accepted. The actual university looks great especially in the field I'm interested in (green chemistry) but I'd like to know a bit more about the actual city. I know I can search online and get more information than I'll ever need but I'd really like to hear it from people who've been there/actually live there.

Thank you for your time :D

Pretty trampy mostly, car washes every 5 yards, and the obvious thing I dont want to be the first one to say

Hmm...

Visiting the place and asking the students before applying would have been the best idea :/

I've yet to formally accept. Based on academic merit the actual University seems good and visiting the UK is a bit of a hassle at the moment due to my thesis work.

The uni is situated right near the town centre, in a pretty dull area of the city.

Good news the local A+E is right next door so when you blow all your loans on beer your right next to your home for the night :)

Oh if there is anything you'd like to know about leicester let me know

just go on an applicant visit day. initially i was wasnt sure between birmingham, manchester and reading uni. a trip to birmingham told me that manchester was way too far from home, and that birmingham was nice. a trip to reading showed me just how much i preferred it to birmingham.

I went to Leicester. Loved every minute of the three years. It's just like any city in that it has it's good and bad areas. Personally I never had any issues. The Uni always rates highly in student satisfaction surveys.

I'm from Derby so we tend to have bad opinions about Leicester/Nottingham. I can't say I'm overly fond of it as a city, but I don't think it's that bad in itself. I have a few friends who live there and seem to love it.

In my opinion there're more exciting places to go for three years.

He's doing an MSc so it's only one year.

Being from Leicester and even going to uni there for a short period I have a fair amount of experience.

In all honestly, it's an OK city. The best way to describe it is that it is fairly mediocre. If you are new to the city and only going to be there for a year there is enough shopping/nightlife/entertainment to keep you satisfied and the town centre is fairly compact and walkable.

Most uni experiences are going to be governed by the people you meet rather than the city you are in.

It is a very multicultural city, so as long as you have no problem with that you should be fine.

If you have anymore specific questions feel free to let me know.

Leicester is the only minority white city in the UK so I hope you have an aversion to Daily Mail types.

Great place other than that. Good bars good night life, drugs are cheap, there's plenty of hookers and the railway station is easy to access from the centre. Highcross (the shopping complex in the center) has pretty much everything you ever need.

Pretty much.

what white minority or daily mail types, tread carefully, racist bandwagon.com

I stayed in the belgrave area 7 years ago when I did my bsc at the said uni. Only did my first year there as I moved to Birmingham uni for the remainder. Not sure how rough it is now but two incidents will always stay in my mind. The first is on a early Friday evening down city centre, being mugged for a pizza outside Pizza Hut entrance. The second was while living in a shared house with 2 other students. We had no landline phone, we used to use a BT payphone about 1min walk around the corner, about 7pm my two housemates went to call back home only to come rushing back banging on the front door for me to let them in. At the phonebox they were chased back by a car full of men throwing bricks at them.
Also heard from other students to stay away from an area ending with fields, can't remember the full name. Btw I' m of a brown colour so I don't they give a crap about colour. Glad I was only there for 1 year.

I worded it poorly. I have no problems with race and I'm proud to be from Leicester. It's the Daily Mail types I have a major problem with.

That's Highfields. Stay away from there, definitely. Braunstone is also another area most people tend to mention in the same vein but I think it's improved in recent years.

LOL you mean highfields,

It's really not that bad at all to be honest, But just like any other city there are certain people not to be messed with when out on the town, they usually frequent regular clubs and the gala casino.

On the whole i like it here, especially the shopping side as the city centre is quite compact and everything is just there within walking distance, also the uni is literally 10 minutes walk to the centre.
