You've completely missed the point, explained further by the sentence you dropped from your quote. OP isn't talking about it happening through the power of belief, but through people believing it so much that they actively make it happen.
It's not a prediction exactly, as far as I know the theory is based on the fact a Mayan calender ends at 2012. This seems to be merely down to the fact one of this calenders cycles ends at this time and no one could be bothered working out the next cycle, hardley suprising as it was written so long ago.
It just has a set amount of days until it resets. Nothing to see here, move along.

Errr no, the Nostradamus 1999 one was one that everyone believed too. Every generation seems to think the world will end during their lifetime. Guess what - it probably won't.
