The Draw:

Build Up:

So with the big 4 all in action in the Mens Draw they have all played in tournaments already with varying results.

First off we have Novak Djokovic the defending champion who spent the late Dec and early January in the Dubai invitational preparing with a dominating win in the final against Ferrer after crushing Roger Federer in the semi finals has started the year comfortably and calmly leading into the first open of the season. The main question is whether he will be able to continue to play as well as last year and maintain his stranglehold on the world number 1 spot this year.

Andy Murray, the runner up in last years final, has started his year interstingly enough for sure. After a shaky start, still stiff after the groin injury suffered at last year, his form grew with solid displays against tough opponents in Tomic and Dolgopolov and we finally get a new coach...Ivan Lendl.

This could be a pivitol move by Andy in his quest to break that Open duct as Lendl won one at the 5th time of asking and then went on to have some great successes. Now officially working full time with Murray this could be exactly what he needs to get over the line and possibly the ideal person to get the best out of Murrays game as he definitely has the arsenal.

Moving onto Nadal and Federer, who have both had indifferent starts to their seasons, a lot needs to be questioned about how ready they actually are.

Nadal has already announced his intention to take a break in February this year which indicates his body isn't quite there yet this year and also two defeats, Ferrer to begin with and then what can only be described as an absolute shock defeat to Gael Monfils. Knowing the warrior Nadal is he will no doubt come out fighting in Melbourne after a weeks preperation but his conditioning must be in question. I guess we'll see how he copes going into week 2 as he inevitably will.

Roger Federer on the other hand was defeated by Novak Djokovic in Dubai and withdrew before semi-final against Tsonga, the winner in Doha, due to a back injury. This will obviously concern Rogers camp as he aims to add another major to his impressive haul through 2012. Much will be about how he manages the injury and getting games over quickly through the early stages of the tournament, something he is notorious for doing already so shouldn't be much of an issue. But against a tougher opponent depending on the state of the injury it may defeat him.

Anyone to look out for outside the top 4:

I'm going to go with 3 players who could certainly prove to be stumbling blocks for any of the Top 4 in Melbourne.

Jo Wilfred Tsonga, great start to the season with his win in Doha and looks to be in fine fitness and form. A previous finalist here and had a fairly decent year last year, I expect him to push on. A tough Quarter Final opponent for anyone in the draw and it would be no surprise if he made the Semi Finals. To reach the final this year however it will take some luck along the way.

Juan Martin Del Potro, after a year basically ruined by injury he is on the comeback trail and starting to show signs of becoming a force in the mens game again. It's all about his recovery still for this one but with his powerful and accurate shot making he is a danger at any round in the draw and potential 4th Round opponent for the top 4. The final may be too early for him at this stage of his comeback but anything can happen with him on the court.

Finally lets not forget David Ferrer, the 5th seed. What a terrific year for him last year and he made the final in Dubai just at the turn of the year. Solid form and a solid game, he's a danger out there for sure and could potentially make the semi's or final, again if the draw is kind to him.

Predictions:

Well I actually think this has the potential to be an exciting tournament with Nadal and Federer both indifferent it may give some of the guys outside the top 4 a chance of making it, however...

I'm going for at least one of Andy Murray or Novak Djokovic reaching the final.

If they are kept apart in the draw we will see a repeat of last years final and if they are kept apart they will meet in the semi final with the winner of that tie my pick to win the title this year.

I'm hoping that Andy can finally do it this year as this is a great tournament and surface for his game. Lendl could be the defining factor to get him over that final hurdle and for the sake of his game I hope it can be his year.

Murray or Djokovic this year for me however.

Betting:

For those of us with an interest in a bit of a flutter pre-tournament here are the notable odds from Sky Bet 10/01/2012

Mens Outright:

Novak Djokovic 7/4
Rafael Nadal 11/4
Roger Federer 9/2
Andy Murray 5/1
Juan Martin Del Potro 8/1
Jo Wilfried Tsonga 28/1
Robin Soderling 40/1
Tomas Berdych 40/1

I have actually taken Murray @ 5/1 for the tournament so a £10 Stake Returns: £60.00

But looking at the odds Jo Wilfred Tsonga is tempting at 28/1 and if you take him each way £10 stake (£5 e/w) if he reaches the final you will recieve at least £75.00 back with £150.00 if he was to win.

Those odds seem fairly generous considering his form and top 4's going into the tournament.

Finally:

Should be an absolutely fantastic tournament again this year as Australia always seems to be and feel free to discuss pre-tournament stuff and any predictions of your own this year also.

Yay - a proper thread. Not much love for tennis in sports apart from the odd grand slam thread.

Can't wait!

Someone's got to do it I suppose

Certainly not enough interest in the sport on here outside the Gland Slams so makes sense to have them 4 times a year.

Hoping for a good tournament, excited to see how the draw pans out this evening.

Ok....I'm officially shocked....Nadal and Fed are on the same side of the draw...

Meaning we have Murray and Djokovic as a potential semi-final.

Just waiting on the full draw being released but it looks like Tsonga is in the same side as Murray also.

Andy plays Ryan Harrison in his opening match.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/tennis/16539280.stm

Fourth seed Andy Murray will play Ryan Harrison of the United States in the first round of the Australian Open.

The British number one meets world number 84 Harrison for the first time.

In the women's singles Elena Baltacha will Stephanie Foretz Gacon of France, with reigning champion Kim Clijsters a potential opponent in the second round.

World number one Caroline Wozniacki will open her campaign against Australia's Anastasia Rodionova.

Watching the live feed Murray has a potential QF of Tsonga.

Looks like it's going to be a difficult one for him.

As much as I want either Nadal or Murray to win, I can't see that happening. Should be a good tournament anyhow, hope Del Potro can put up a solid performance, he still has the ability.

Still making his way back form injury but obviously a massive threat at any stage in the Tournament. Don't like him but can appreciate he has some skill, his returning power is just something else.

Full Draw link added to the original post now.

Also Ivan Lendl has spoken on his first impressions working with Andy, it's an interesting move and hopefully one that pays off in the long term.

New coach Ivan Lendl says Andy Murray is "an absolute pleasure to work with" as they continue preparations for their first Grand Slam event together.

The Australian Open begins in Melbourne on Monday with Murray, the fourth seed, drawn against American Ryan Harrison.

He warmed up on Friday with a straight sets win over David Nalbandian in an exhibition at Kooyong watched by Lendl.

Lendl lost his first four 'slams' before beating John McEnroe 3-6 2-6 6-4 7-5 7-5 in 1984 at the French Open final.
Bjorn Borg beat him in 1981 at the French Open final 6-1 4-6 6-2 3-6 6-1.
Jimmy Connors defeated Lendl in 1982 at the US Open 6-3 6-2 4-6 6-4.
In 1983 Connors was again the victor at the US Open, winning 6-3 6-7 7-5 6-0.
And Mats Wilander defeated Ivan Lendl 6-1 6-4 6-4 in the 1983 Australian Open final.
"He is asking a lot of questions which is great," said Lendl. "We've had a good time, had good laughs."

Asked what the key to a successful player/coach relationship is, Lendl said: "It has to be a good match-up personality wise, and I believe it is.

"You have to respect each other.

"We met a few times in Florida and that was one thing I asked for, a few meetings, so we could see how everyone is [got on]."

Lendl, in his first coaching job, is keen to manage expectations going into the first major of the year. He also feels Murray has attracted unnecessarily harsh criticism for some of his previous tilts at the sport's big prizes.

"I think what is important is to focus on the long term and let results come to you," he said. "A player needs to mature and I believe Andy is getting there.

"He was heavily criticised for losing to Djokovic at the start of the year [2011 Australian Open final] but look what a year Novak had. If that had happened later in the year nobody would be criticising Andy the way they did."

Murray and Lendl's partnership already seems to be working
Read Jonathan's blog here
Meanwhile one of Lendl's great rivals, John McEnroe, has overcome initial doubts to predict success for the new partnership which is the talk of tennis.

"I thought it was a leftfield shot, sort of desperate," he told BBC Sport after helping with the draw ceremony on Friday, "but on reflection I was wrong. I think it could work really well.

"Lendl brings credibility. He's a really hard worker.

"What will be interesting is to see how Murray acts when he gets a little negative and starts shouting to his box.

"It's one thing to do it to Brad Gilbert, it's another thing to do it to Ivan Lendl so I'll be interested to see what happens."

However, Murray says he was attracted by the honest and open approach of his new coach.

Murray, 24, said: "A lot of people are maybe too nice sometimes; they just don't want to upset you or say the wrong thing.

"But he was very honest, very open and that was important."

Lendl lost his first four grand slam finals before going on to win eight major singles titles and hold the world number one ranking for 270 weeks.

Murray has suffered the frustration of losing all three of the major finals he has contested in an era dominated by what many regard as three of the greatest players of all time: Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Djokovic.

Yeah, it's going to be an exciting year for tennis if Del Potro can regain his fitness and Tsonga etc can remain consistent to challenge the top four. Can Djokovic remain dominant this year as he did last year.

I think this is the year Murray can prevail in the Aussie or US open.

I for one hope you're right mate :D

I actually think meeting Djokovic in the Semi Final may be a blessing in disguise to be honest.

There is no doubting that Federer is on the decline and that Nadal really hasn't done great in Australia, his win apart, so meeting one of those 2 in the Final I feel would give Murray a much better chance.

I also think that Murrays draw works in his benefit as he can't take any match for granted in there so hopefully he will be able to string together some consistent performances, and Lendl looks like he won't take any of his lip :p

Live Aus Open coverage has begun on EuroSport, Heather Watson is representing GB at the moment against Azarenka and is pretty much doing badly so far...could be an early Brit elimination, as is standard now

4 Brits are out, not even one set won between the four games. Anne Keothavong and Murray left.

Good thing the LTA are going down the 'not setting specific targets' route.

Make that 5

No surprises of course!

Nadal is through with Tomic coming from 2 sets down to defeat Verdasco.

Murray will be on court Tuesday at 2:00AM GMT :(

Murray through in 4 sets, losing the first. So a notoriously slow start but Anderson played really well mixing it up in the first but after the break in the second there was only going to be one winner.

Novak through easily in straight sets and sounds like he is in fine form.

Tsonga also through in 4 sets today.

Murray next after Kvitova-Suarez Navarro.

Novak making damn short work of his opponent, does he have a dinner date at 5 or something? :p

[Edit] Ferrer making things very difficult for himself at the moment.

Murray much more comfortable today in a straight sets win...Llorda next, should be another in straight sets.

Tsonga also through...

Federer has Karlovic next up, could be interesting!

Murray wins over Llodra 6-4, 6-2, 6-0 :D

Pretty awesome performance after a fairly tight first set...Murray wrapping up the 3rd in 23 minutes!

Great to watch...some amazing lobs, and great banter from Llorda at the end...mimicing Murrays groans and laughing as he was lobbed yet again! :D

Up next is Kukushkin of Kazakhstan as he knocked out Monfils in 4. Looking forward to the second week now :)

Only saw the third set but Murray was brilliant, utterly ruthless. If he can keep that up he's got a shot at winning this.

Hewitt put out Raonic 3-1 earlier on...now plays Novak...which in all honesty will end up a walkover for Novak.

Federer/Tomic tonight should be good :D
