Hi, i am considering updating the CPU in my HTPC and rather than do a full on refresh i was wondering about just replacing the CPU if i can find one second hand at a cheap cost.

My motherboard is the Asus A8N-VM CSM and it supports socket 939.

At the moment i have an Athlon 64 4000+ @ 2.4Ghz in there. the board also supports Athlon X2 and FX chips as per the link above. Would i see much improvement moving to one of these, like a dual-core X2 4200 for instance? or would an FX be better?

just looking for a bit of extra processing power for DVD upscaling and the likes

Yes, you should see quite a difference. Although last time I checked socket 939 chips were fetching a small premium over am2 chips.

The cheapest I can find on the bay (I've not looked hard) is about £40. It's REALLY not worth that price IMHO

I went from athlon 64 3000 or 3200 to x2 4200 and it was worth it.

How does the Athlon 64 4000+ handle full hd videos and iplayer/flash?

I have an old 3500+ and 6600gt which i was thinking of turning into a htpc, i guess i could go test if it's still useful.

My Athlon 64 4000+ handles HD fine. can play Blu-ray using PowerDVD no issues, and 1080p / 720p AVI content etc. when i bought my blu-ray drive i did have to update my RAM (2Gb at least) and graphics card, so just make sure your graphics card is powerful enough

An Athlon X2 will be so much better... lots available on a certain auction site, often £20'ish for the X2 3800+ or £25'ish for a 4200+. Sell your old Athlon 64 4000 on the same site too :)

I upgraded my HTPC from a Athlon 3800+ to a 5000+ x2, the difference was immense, best of all it idles at 23°C :D

ive just received an Athlon X2 4200+ bought from members market but im having real trouble getting it to work. have literally just unplugged the old CPU and installed new one. system turns on and fans and HD start to spin, but screen remains black and does not post into the BIOS

i tried reverting back to the old CPU and it boots fine, so i know it's not the RAM, graphics card or anything. i went into Windows and flashed the BIOS to the latest revision using the Asus update tool (even though the revision i was on v1001 was supposed to be fine anyway). the old CPU boots fine and works, but again the new X2 doesnt post

can anyone think of anything to try or can this only be a faulty X2 CPU?
