favourite poems?

Thanks so much, battery is dying so have to turn 3G off now, but will reply properly tomorrow. Some of these poems make me regret my degree choice so much. :(

I seriously considered English as a degree but thought it might end up making me resent reading so chose maths instead! It's possibly better to keep your hobbies/passions as just that.
 
You don't need a degree to appreciate or learn good literature....a degree is simply a confirmation, not a necessity to learning.

Oh I agree, but anything is better than business management. :p


You don't need to do an English degree to appreciate poetry, in fact all you really need is The Anthologist by Nicholson Baker which discusses a lot of technical stuff in a very accessible way (my poetry Professor makes every first year read it) and a copy of the Norton Anthology of Poetry. The Norton has pretty much every major poet since the beginning of time, plus some really useful glosses and explanations on each page. From there you can just explore the styles you like.

Thanks for those suggestions, I'll try and buy them cheaply somewhere. If not, I'll borrow them from my uni library when I'm back.


Next up is definitely going to be paradise lost. Going in for an operation tomorrow so won't be speaking/eating properly for God know's how long, so will be nice to have some stuff to keep me occupied.

Just bought that Norton Anthology. Okay it's the original 1983 one, but it was only £5 delivered vs £28 new (woe is me poor student).

Favourite poem? Well, that has to be The Iliad (closely followed by The Odyssey), but it's far too long to quote here, at something over 15000 lines of dactylic hexameter, it is, as they say, 'epic'.

So have some Larkin, instead:

One of the finest pieces of English literature that has ever been written (or spoken ;)). I'd recommend Seamus Heaney's interpretation above most of the others as it seems to capture the drama with none of the stuffiness of many of the academic translations.

One of the best things is when you've read the poem enough times and then look at the Saxon original it's amazing how much of the Saxon language is understandable (particularly sounds of words rather than their spelling). If you get a chance listen to a reading of the Saxon version and you'll be surprised once you've tuned your ear to the sound :)
