Another spec me thread - 2K Budget

I'm sure you can. And they will be very tired at that money.

I disagree, there are lots of them about and they aren't all sheds by any means. Trade in that has been sent direct to auction would be potentially cheapest starting point with a few hundred kept back for repairs.

Another for the mix.

What the consensus on Saabs 9-3?

I like their exterior look, and assuming you are OK with spending slightly more on what is essentially a slightly more dynamic vectra in a posh frock then go for it.

Personally I'd never get on with the dashboard, but plenty of people like that look.

Seems everybody recommends the mondeo, but i find them a bit fugly. Just seeing what else is out there.

You are buying a cheap car, you won't be finding any Aston Martins so looks are secondary to functionality, reliability and how likely you are to find a nice one.

This is where the Saab 9-3, assuming you mean the newer 2002 onwards shape, falls flat on its face.

Needs to be reliable, don’t want to be breaking down on a motorway god knows where, cheap to maintain, cheap insurance and good MPG.

This means no ageing prestige (or semi-prestige in the case of the Saab) cars.

What is the issue with the Saab? (not trying to provoke an argument, genuinely interested, as other than how they look, I've never really taken an interest in them)

Is it the reliability or the cost of servicing/running?

Just everything - 17 and 18 inch wheels so more expensive tyres, turbocharged engines, generally older for the money, etc etc. Same reason you wouldn't expect a 1998 Audi A6 to cost the same to run as a 1998 Fiesta..

Like most sub £2k buyers he is quite concerned with running costs, therefore we should avoid prestige and sub prestige level cars.

Honda Accord maybe a good shout.

Could probably get a petrol Mazda 6 for under 2k, if its the Mondeo's looks thats putting you off.

Ends in 3 hours so too late to think about.

Even if it didn't end in 3 hours, isn't a VW Passat going to (to some extent) suffer from inflated servicing and running costs compared to a "lesser" brand?

That, and the steering wheel is shinier than a polished 2012 minted 1p peice, and it has dodgy angel-eye headlights.

Mazda 6 would be a good car, look different enough from the mondeo like you say. I like that era of passat too though the 2 litre is a bit of a dog - reliable enough but a boring engine, reasonable on fuel and fine when driving normally to be fair.

Be better looking at the toledo of the same age if you like the passat - they go for buttons

No diesel at this budget is a silly comment IMO.

I know of 3 cars, all with the same VAG 1.9TDI engine (Leon, Octavia, A4) that are worth £2K or under that have given trouble free motoring for the last 3-5 years and theres no reason why they should not continue to do so.
