£2200 to spend

What about watercooling ?
With that much money he should do watercooling.

Not with a 1440/1600p screen he can't. Watercooling is very expensive and can destroy budgets. Using mine as an example, for a cpu block and 2 gpu waterblocks + rads and pump and all the barbs/hose/misc stuff, I've spent around £540.

Due to that, it would quite literally be monitor or watercooling.

I hadn't considered an i7 3930 should I?

I also tried a 27inch monitor and feel its too big so am thinking 24inch Asus Proart instead :)

What could we do still sticking to my original budget with that change?

It's expensive and the improvements probably aren't worth it for you

Very similar to Reapers spec above:

consider a gtx580 such as:
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=gx-153-ok&groupid=701&catid=1914&subcat=1812

although it is not quite as good, it has cuda which can be used in some editing software and things. maybe do a bit of research into it, it can massively help in some applications. usually you just need to install a plug in or something. more info/a starting point:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/cuda_app_tesla.html

Also bare in mind this is under budget, so you could get another screen or something. Or it allows some budget to have it built for you.

Don't you need a gen 3 board if your going for a Radeon HD 7970 series of cards.

No :) You can, but atm it makes no/little difference.

two GTx560Tis in SLI probably would be better in some games, but I'd always get the best single card I can, then you could have two 580s in the future (would want 850W for that). The 580 is a great card. That or the 7970 it's up to you.

You spec above is good. Don't know much about the Asus screen but the Dell is on offer, and may be better? I've heard great things about Dell Monitors.

EDIT:

560Ti SLI vs 580

Also, if you can afford it I'd recommend the PSU I chose over the one you have. Give you more options in the future and it's great! It's also modular which helps.

Is a 256GB SSD too large? (I have stacks of Sata and a NAS). I keep going backwards and forwards on 24inch vs 27inch screen (1920x1200 vs 2560x1440) and I keep going between 560TI, 580 3GB and 7970 :(

Get gtx 580.
SSD 120GB or 60GB is fine for the system just make sure you have HDD to store your media.
Then in futuer get water cooling.

You're getting a 580 for the price of a 7970, not smart!

Go for extra HD gaming!

Not the best of advice with that graphics card as its a none reference model (its palit, I own 2 of them). EK don't make the waterblocks anymore for them and they have to be specially made. I've had two of them arranged to be made via RJK from OcUK and they are due any day now.

If he wants watercooling on a 580 GTX, he HAS to get a reference model just so he can use a waterblock (full cover) when the time comes.

Personally, I'd go for a 560ti, save the rest of the money until kepler launches and go for the top end card then, having the best of both worlds with CUDA, waterblock availability and no VRAM issues.

I wanted the i7 for transcoding and hyperthreading. It was only a bit more expensive on the This Week only deal for the 2700k variant.

I decided also to go for 7970 due to my 2560x1440 resolution.
