Two pumps ok?.

Hi,

So i've got a watercooling setup running off that XSPC single bay res/pump combo. I've just bought a EK 4.0 to improve the flow, but is it possible to have both pumps running, or should I just unplug the bay res?. Will the flow be ok even though the water must pass through the pump in the res?. I can't afford anything else right now, otherwise i'd be getting the pumpless bay res.

Cheers

It is generally thought of as a bad idea to have two disimmilar pumps running in a loop as the less powerful one can be put under more stress as it is always try to "catch up" with the other one. You may find if you run both the small one in the res will die anyway. Ideally you'd want to remove the impellor from the pump in the res to remove the flow restriction, or even remove the pump altogether. But looking at some pics of that res this seems like it could be tricky to dismantle and put back together water tight.

If it was me I would bite the bullet and get a new res or even try a T line for a bit, after first trying with the res in the loop as is, to see if there would be any serious performance gain to be had by swapping the res to one without this restriction.

Thanks for the replies.

Yeah I've set it up today and it seems the smaller pump just can't feed the EK 4.0 enough water so its noisy as hell. Looks like I'll just have to buy a new Reservoir as it can't be disassembled without taking some sort of hacksaw or dremel to it.
