18th January - Censorship Day

I don't live in the United States. How can I help?

Contact your local State Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, or similar branch of government. Tell them you oppose SOPA and PIPA, and any similar legislation. SOPA and PIPA will affect sites outside of the United States, and actions to sites inside the United States (like Wikipedia) will also affect non-American readers -- like you. Calling your own government will also let them know you don't want them to create their own bad anti-Internet legislation.
Anyone got the number for 'The Government'?

All you preaching, what are you actively doing to oppose this then?

Your local MP.

Chances they have any idea what it is, is quite frankly slim, I'm not spending half an hour on the phone explaining it either.

Those lending your support, you're re-tweeting or face booking something presumably, that's helping how?

And you're doing nothing is helping how?

It's called awareness.

Your attitude stinks.

While i fully support the protest of this ridiculous SOPA bill, i think it will have little impact when the likes of Youtube, Facebook et al are still operating. Without those huge sites's backing this blackout i fail to see what effect it will have :(

You really don't understand how SOPA/PIPA work or the damage they can do, do you?

Could and very unlikely to work.

To quote robbo

I don't think it will go ahead either, it's certainly possible but it would be very shocking.

And if it did actually go ahead, I don't think it would be used in the way many people believe it will be used.

It just needs some more amendmants. Even with safeguards in an amendmant people would still be against it, no surprise though.

I've spoken to my local MP and discussed the issue at length with him. This conversation has persuaded him to join a group of MPs who are going to raise an early day motion on the subject.

What are you doing?

"For evil to prosper all that is required is that good men do nothing".

Just because an action might not have the desired outcome doesn't mean you shouldn't at least try.

Nvidia have actively spoken out against it too. They're rather large. :p

The Wikipedia blackout is kinda funny; in our advanced web lecture earlier many slides had references to Wikipedia in them (lol). Our lecturer didn't open them because he didn't know about the workaround! Not really a workaround since Wikipedia still allows access via mobile etc.

Google and Facebook wont follow suit the likes of Wikipedia and reddit because of the simple fact of how "needed" they are for thousands and thousands of businesses.

If for nothing else, the very fact that Rupert Murdoch SUPPORTS SOPA is reason enough to be against it.

And about how much SOPA is covered in the "media"
