Hello All,

Brief history and will try not to bore you all. Im heavily into gaming from console, handheld, to random retro devices like the GP32X and of course the PC. I currently have:
1) Core 2 Duo 6600 running at 2.40 (no overclocking)
2) ATI HD 4800 512 mb
3) Mobo is .. No idea, device manager has it as ACPI X86 based
4) Harddrive is an old school one with a capacity if 300 gigs only (Hitachi)
5) Standard DVD drive - no issues with it
6) 650 Power unit, I purchased from here, was OCZ if I remember correctly
7) 4 gig of ram DDR2 - again, not sure exactly, Im sure I got them from here
(Above is all from memory and not opening up my case)
8) Finally - display is an old FLATRON -LG..and is im sure against all health and safety - buzzing if you mess with the lead into the back
9) Windows 7

What Im looking for at a budget of approx £1000

1) less a 'desktop' and more something for the front room under the TV.
2) To run with sound on my 40 inch HDTV 1080p
3) To run games like Witcher 2/ Totalwar/ ST:KOR at full wack.. at a stretch Battlefield, but I tend to play FPS on the console.. crazy I know.
4) Runs emulators at full tilt as well - mine can almost, but struggles with N64 emulation
5) I want to set it up almost like a multi-media set up.. runs films/ games/ emulators and so on. Is this possible, with a custom interface on load up i.e. like some of the freedash set ups on the 360 (you tube)

I will build myself if cheaper - or buy if one matches the above discription..

I have a logitech G11 keyboard and gaming mouse, but would be interested in wireless options. I have two children one is 7 but the other is nearly one, and wires are not a good idea...

If no good 'living room options' the throw a new display in as well

I have ranted.. but in summary PC for the living room, films and games with a customer interface using Windows 7

**Side note** Anyone own a 3DS and what is your opinion - its the first console in a while I have not purchased at launch = not sure about it yet. Holding out for the Open Pandora. Thanks in advance

Look at some of the amp style HTPC cases. They are designed not to look out of place next to pro audio equipment and TVs......you will pay more than for a standard case though.

You might be able to raid the PSU from the old build. If your HDD and DVD is IDE you will need to replace these too.

You have plenty of cash there to flesh out all kinds of specs.

Your aiming for atleast a cheap Z series mobo, 4GB of RAM, i3 (cheap option) or an i5K. The ati 6850 is a good budget gaming card, the EVGA 460 SOC is better. They are £100 and £120 respectively. Shouldn't be a problem to get a SSD in there too which will speed the OS and games up nicely.

I know guys will spec you up so im not going into too much detail here. How much you spend and what you choose is largely upto you.

As far as hooking it up to a HDTV you can do that via HDMI. You will get sound and video, just make sure you have a spare HDMI port on the TV ;)

XBMC is a great program for home theatre pcs (HTPCs). I seem to recall it has MAME built into it's frontend. Google it for some pics and info, i don't believe you can start the PC games from there but it certainly covers the media side of things nicely. It's customizable with skins as well.

There are quite a few very good HTPC sytle cases in your budget which will accomodate full ATX motherboards and full height expansion cards if you don't fancy a full/mid tower case and want it in the systle of an AV receiver. Have a look at Silverstones range here.

Runs emulators at full tilt as well

You can run emulators through XBMC as well.

Nice one, thank you. Funny thing, on my old Xbox I used to use XBMC, didnt even think of it for the PC. Looks exactly what I was looking for.
Case: I like the look of the ones recommended, but would that affect the GFX and Motherboard.. due to size issue? Would noise be an issue. I really like the new Alienware style of build - almost perfect, but cost, and would rather buy components from here.

Also wireless keyboard and mouse - any recommendations. Thanks again, info has already helped

Like shadow said there are cases that take full height cards. It will depend on what GPU card you choose, some of them are HUGE lol You should be able to find the measurements of the cards and the dimensions of the cases easy enough.

The reason we suggest the Z series is that not only does it overclock like the P series but has the IGP of the H series. There is something called lucid virtu. Basically when you have a dedicated GPU installed the rig can make clever use of the IGP. Either using it to encode video while your gaming or disabling the gaming card when it's not needed, saving power and obviously less noise because the GPU fan isnt going "full chat".

Once the 360 is outdated i'll Jtag mine. XBMC is about as close to freedash as you are going to get on the PC.

Hello All, ok had to revise my costs and so on - holiday to America came first. Anyways, using the above builds, I will be keeping my current DVD drive and Power supply of 650w (if thats enough) and will be running through HD TV. Looking to buy before end of tomorrow due to sales closing:

Will this be ok? For running recent games like Skyrim and B3 and using it as multi media center?

Would a sound card be worth the additional expense as well.

Instead of spending £25 on a cooler and get a 2300, get an i5 2500K which you can overclock :)The retail cooler is fine for now, and you can even overclock it a bit on that one.

Lower profile RAM which wont interfere with a cooler should you get one later
Other choices where good.
This GPU has 5 years warranty if you register I believe:

Actually, get the agility 3 SSD, which is much faster:

Don't need a samsung f3 then, it's very good but something cheaper will do as you've got an SSD.

EDIT: Sorry not sure if someone has asked, but is your DVD drive SATA? else it wont work with this motherboard

i just want to make sure im recommending the right thing here. you want a HTPC style PC for gaming, have a budget of just under £700 and can recycle the OS, DVD drive and PSU.

as long as the DVD drive is SATA then that will be fine, and i'd recommend this:

1 x Antec Fusion Remote HTPC Case - Black £139.99

1 x Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM 1TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache - OEM (ST1000DM001) £85.99
1 x Corsair XMS3 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (CMX8GX3M2A1600C9) £38.39
1 x Scythe Shuriken Rev.B Quiet Low Profile CPU Cooler (Socket 939/940/AM2/AM2+/AM3/LGA775/LGA1155/LGA1156/LGA1366) £27.98
Total : £705.41 (includes shipping : £11.75).

i'm 99% sure everything will fit in that case, but its probably worth asking someone else just to make sure :)

as you can see, the graphics card isnt quite as good as the other builds, but it should sit nicely in the living room
