Passed my test at 31. Any way to get cheaper insurance?

I finally decided to learn to drive last year and passed my test yesterday. Woo, yay, etc.

Now however I've got the joy of shopping around for insurance quotes. The car in question is a 2001 Fiat Seicento (I know, but it's free. Gift horse and all that) and I'm getting quotes in the region of £1600 for TPF&T.

Are there any insurers that deal with slightly more mature drivers or is it just going to be a case of sucking it up for a year and then (hopefully) relying on NCB to bring the cost down?

I passed at 30 and have been driving about a year.

I found Tesco car insurance cheaper and get some named drivers added ! :)

That is mightily expensive considering your age, do you have a bad postcode? Quite often third party insurance isn't actually any cheaper than fully comp, even if it is it probably won't be by much. Just use all the comparison sites and get the top few cheapest ones and maybe play them off against each other for discounts.

Recommending an insurance company is difficult as there's an element of black magic with quotes, one company may be cheap for one person and extortionate for another. It all depends on their target customer profile.

comparison sites are useless unless you got some solid NCD as i have found out, passed on the 5th and im still looking for somthing in my price range.

it's all hit and miss really and no help over the phone either as soon as they hear "i dont have any NCD" there eyes fill with £££ signs best i could get was £1,536 fully comp on a 1.1 206. with co-op

i then decided i may as well go on my family members fiesta 1.2 which only costs them £700 with me as a named driver - i'll only be using it about 5 hours a week if that, plus it builds my NCD (as long as i stick with them for insurance)

I passed last year being 34 and my insurance for a S reg (13 year old at the time) 1.3 Fiesta 3 Door no frills model was £1446 - managed to snag £890 this year fully comp though with 1 years NCB :)

£1600 is pretty high and you should be able to find it cheaper, but bear in mind that car insurance quotes are based on experience as well as age, hence the high quotes you're getting.

Ouch. I also passed at 31. First Insurance was £790 fully comp with Admiral on a Mazda 3. Renewed with them in December after they matched the best quote I could find, at £500.

Doing the usual adding of experienced drivers and any random female family member, putting excess at £500, and choosing the best job description possible? If you haven't these may lower that premium substantially. If not it may be worth looking at other cars?

My sister passed @ 31 and managed to insure a mazada 626 1999 2ltr fully comprehensive for 950 RH postcode though through admiral

Cheers for the tips guys. I've added my Mum (with her permission of course!) as a named driver, gone fully comp and raised the excess to £500 and I've got a quote of £1241 with Admiral.

I think that's probably as good as it's going to get without resorting to insurance fraud and saying the car is kept at my Mums much nicer postcode (which I'm not doing)

yup thats a pretty good deal and that will go down to 800 or so after your first year of NCD good luck!

Good job with reducing it, I was going to add either my dad or father in law who have been driving around 20-30 years with no claims, adding these on made my premium even higher. Strange strange insurance companies :)

i think the word you're looking for is greed :p

should just be a flat rate for everyone, and then increase/decrease on your policy price for your driving style and any claims you make *crys*

Congrats Paul, next year should be better for insurance, as one as you don't stack it :)
