The gf has just sold her 07 Fiesta ST frozen white and wants a upgrade! What do you guys think of the VW R32 2007 model? Anyone here had one? Thanks

Focus ST is better than the R32 and uses less fuel and is slightly lighter I believe

but the R32 is better trim quality wise, but this probably isn't worth the VW premium

And once the novelty wears off you end up with a car that doesnt have the poise of a GTI, is only a little bit quicker and is a lot more thirsty.

I've driven dsg versions of both the mk5 r32 and mk5 gti.

The gti is more of a hot hatch in its handling and performance, and the r32 more of a fast cruiser. It's not a bad car, far from it, but as a drivers car the gti is better.

I agree with the above comments.

The R32 cannot out handle my Ibiza Cupra, far too much understeer whereas a GTI would have been gone.

GTI is a far better balanced car, the R32 just has the noise and straight line grunt + 4WD

I'd agree with the above as well, with the addition that it's still worth trying both and seeing which of the two you prefer.

I'd also throw (depending on budget) the 2007 onwards Audi S3, which combines the best of both worlds :)

I think the S3 is without question a better car than the Mk5 Golf in any form. However whether its worth it would depend on the sort of premium they command. It isn't £5k better, but it's better.

The R32 is, in essence, a marmite car.
I personally love them, but don't think I could consider owning one.

The 2007 ones benefit from cheaper tax than the later models IIRC. If you're set on one then I'd ensure it has the nav entertainment unit and preferably DSG.

But I think you'd be better off putting your money into something else in reality.

Perhaps I should've rephrased that. In terms of ownership, I'd say it's marmite. Essentially, they are generally owned by enthusiasts and people that are willing to pay over the odds for a Golf with a thirsty 3.2 V6

Thanks guys, I must admit it’s the v6 sound that I like the most, but a GTI may be more suited, I never liked golf’s until the R32 model, but looking around they do look like a modern car and will hold the shape longer than most cars for the money.
I was looking at the BMW 130I M Sport until Top gear + 5th Gear said the Golf put the bigger smile on your face. Still the BMW is cheaper and still German, as for the Audi nice car but just to much and we don’t like the back end of them.. So next Question the BMW???? Thanks

I would take the 130i or if you can afford it and want a coupe a 135i out on a test drive. They are both fantastic little cars.
