Q6600 still good enough?

Moving on from the Q6600 now makes sense to me because it still runs the latest games fine (with a decent overclock). It still has some resale value.

Offloading my 775 hardware while it was still desirable reduced the cost of a SB system quite considerably.

Waiting for the latest technology is a never ending loop, if you wait long enough you'll end up paying through the nose for something that's only a bit better than the previous generation & your current hardware will be worth much less as nobody will want it.

For the games I play I don't need to upgrade at the moment, the q is doing me proud.

It seems well paired with my gpu at this clock and I intend to keep them together for a while yet.

Once I do eventually upgrade it'll be a new build and I'll keep this one going as a media unit/browser, can see it lasting a few years yet. Now I've just tempted fate and it's going to melt :P

Same, after I sold my Q6600/mobo/ram I only added £150 for the 2500k/mobo/ram. They will only go down in price, when I got my Q6600 at the start of last year they were still making £80+ Can get them for £50 maybe less now. So it does make sense to sell before they become £30 chips, unless you plan to keep them like said above for media servers etc.

I'm in exactly the same position, wanting a new cpu etc, and now going to sell my CPU/Mobo/Ram and cooler... just haven't a clue what to sell them for, but fancy a new chip now as this CPU is dfeffo bottlenecking my GPU's... the time has come...

I keep getting tempted to go for SB or IB when that comes out. I think I'll keep the trusty old chip a while longer yet though, I get decent frame rates in everything I play, I have no need to upgrade. Yes and upgrade would speed things up and make games like BF3 play nicer, but they run well enough as they are.

Maybe I am understanding it wrong but if the 6950 is running at 99% and the cpu cores aren't, is that not holding things back????

don't worry about it dude, that other person is just talking the usual crap and is one of those who is in denial that the graphics processor is the biggest limiting factor in gaming performance and the processor rarely makes that much of a difference, same thing with me and my 'terrible' Bulldozer processor getting higher frame-rates than my mates 2600K in a number of games at real-world resolutions, because we're both being held back by graphics processor and the difference (1 - 2FPS) is irrelevant and can be dismissed as 'normal variation'.

in-fact think he is just one of these people that has became so sucked in by the bull crap style reviewers choose with the artificial low resolution tests to intentionally create a processor bottleneck and assuming that is real-world performance...

Errrr I think you are talking gash tbh, I have not looked back but I am sure I did not say that. So everything you just said about me was made up and gash.

I said the 6950 was not a bottleneck on my [email protected]. But seeing as it does run at 99% a lot like the other guy said then I guess it is. Nothing more to say about it. But your entire post about me was LOL gash. Nothing more to read into what I said, but w/e

Reason I say that is the card likes to run at its peak, I just figured that was what they did.

open a thread in the price check forum ;)

My Q6600 is fine for anything i do, the only reason i am upgrading is the 775 mobo is getting old now and i want sata 3 and pci-e 2, i know i could get a newer 775 board but it a bit of a dead end really and with my mobo cpu and ram i will get £100ish so its a £130 upgrade

i had a q6600 back in 2008 but got rid because it was too powerful for my needs (and i was skint). i've just got myself another one and am banking on it lasting a few years yet. :p

i like being behind the curve when it comes to hardware - it's so much cheaper. :D

I'm guessing my Q6700 isn't worlds apart from a Q6600 and mine is doin great for now.

I've been tempted by sandy bridge but think i'll wait till April/May for ivybridge to take the sandybridge price down a bit!

Prices won't drop much for new stuff, it will just be phased out.

I'm waiting for the ivy bridge before i upgrade from my Q6600, the price may not drop in the shops as you suggest they'l be phased out but i reckon there'll be quite a few people who like the new stuff who will sell they sandybridge stuff so i'll be keeping a close eye on the MM for a bargain :)

WHat would you say is a good price for one btw :P They seem to be going up all the time in the MM

2nd hand is going for £50-£60 atm.

I bought mine from MM for £80. However that was 1.5 years ago. Since then prices have come down due to further depreciation. At that time I also sold my E6600 for £50.

So upgrade to Q6600 has only cost me £30

[email protected] is giving me very nice performance. :)

Still running Q6600's @3.5ghz in gaming and media PC's, both systems have decent gpu's.... gaming : GTX 570, media : HD 5850. Both systems still seem to be good enough for latest games (1200p & 1080p) encoding, blu ray etc.

you seriously take the biscuit. i've seen your posts in the MM expecting a q6600 and cooler to be shipped to malta for 40 quid.

the going rate is 50-55 for the bare cpu only here in the UK.
